Role Summary
The Senior Accountant is responsible for managing and overseeing the end-to-end accounting, financial reporting, and compliance functions of the shipping line business. The role ensures the accuracy of financial records, timely reporting, regulatory compliance, and effective financial control over shipping and liner operations. The incumbent will work closely with operations, commercial, agency, and principal teams to ensure accurate accounting of voyage-related revenues and expenses, while supporting business profitability and operational efficiency.
Key ResponsibilitiesFinancial Accounting & Reporting
- Manage day-to-day accounting activities including general ledger maintenance, accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank reconciliations, and journal entries.
- Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and management reports.
- Ensure accurate recording and reconciliation of all financial transactions in accordance with applicable accounting standards and company policies.
- Monitor financial performance and provide analytical reports to management for decision-making.
Shipping & Voyage Accounting
- Oversee accounting for shipping and liner operations, including:
- Freight and slot revenue
- Vessel and voyage costs
- Terminal handling charges
- Port and agency expenses
- Feeder and transshipment costs
- Inland haulage and logistics costs
- Detention, demurrage, storage, and related charges
- Ensure accurate voyage-wise and trade-wise profitability reporting.
- Analyze operational costs and identify opportunities for cost optimization.
Reconciliation & Settlement Management
- Review and approve reconciliations of principal accounts, agent accounts, and intercompany balances.
- Coordinate with principals, agents, and internal stakeholders to resolve discrepancies promptly.
- Ensure timely settlement and reconciliation of vendor, customer, and principal accounts.
- Monitor container deposit accounting and ensure proper reconciliation and refund processes.
Receivables & Credit Control
- Monitor outstanding receivables and customer aging reports.
- Support credit control activities and coordinate with customers, agents, and commercial teams for timely collections.
- Escalate collection issues and recommend corrective actions where necessary.
Budgeting & Financial Analysis
- Assist in the preparation of annual budgets, forecasts, and financial plans.
- Conduct variance analysis between budgeted and actual performance.
- Provide cost analysis and profitability insights to support business strategy and operational decisions.
Compliance & Audit
- Ensure compliance with statutory requirements, tax regulations, accounting standards, and internal control policies.
- Coordinate with auditors and consultants for statutory, internal, and principal audits.
- Prepare audit schedules, supporting documents, and explanations required during audits.
- Ensure timely closure of audit observations and implementation of corrective actions.
Process Improvement & Team Leadership
- Review and enhance accounting processes, reporting procedures, and internal controls.
- Identify opportunities for automation and process efficiency improvements.
- Supervise, guide, and mentor junior accounting staff.
- Review team deliverables and support professional development initiatives.
QualificationsEducation
- Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce, Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline.
- Professional qualifications such as CA, CMA, ACCA, or equivalent will be an added advantage.
Experience
- Minimum 5–7 years of accounting experience.
- At least 2–3 years of experience in Shipping, Liner, NVOCC, Logistics, Freight Forwarding, or Maritime Operations.
- Experience in voyage accounting, principal settlements, and shipping cost management is highly preferred.
Required Skills & Competencies
- Strong understanding of shipping and liner financial processes, including freight revenue, voyage costing, port expenses, and agency/principal settlements.
- Sound knowledge of accounting standards, taxation, and financial reporting requirements.
- Proficiency in ERP systems and accounting software.
- Advanced MS Excel skills, including reporting and financial analysis.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
- Effective communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet strict reporting deadlines.
- High level of integrity, confidentiality, accountability, and ownership.

Pay: ₹30,000.00 - ₹40,000.00 per month
