Position Overview
We are seeking a highly motivated Mechanical Design & Production Engineer to support the design, development, prototyping, testing, and production of advanced defense systems. The ideal candidate will have strong experience in mechanical design using SolidWorks, engineering calculations, manufacturing processes, and production support.
The role involves working closely with multidisciplinary teams including RF, Electronics, FPGA, Software, and Manufacturing engineers to develop ruggedized products capable of operating in demanding military environments.
Key ResponsibilitiesMechanical Design & Development
- Develop 3D CAD models, assemblies, and detailed manufacturing drawings using SolidWorks.
- Design mechanical systems, enclosures, mounting structures, thermal management solutions, and electromechanical assemblies.
- Generate and interpret engineering drawings with GD&T in accordance with BS8888 standards.
- Perform engineering calculations, tolerance stack-up analysis, structural verification, and design validation.
- Support prototype development, testing, and design iterations.
- Conduct design reviews and present technical solutions to internal and external stakeholders.
- Ensure compliance with industry standards, environmental requirements, and defense specifications.
- Create and maintain technical documentation, BOMs, design reports, and manufacturing packages.
Production & Manufacturing Support
- Support transition of products from prototype to production.
- Work closely with vendors and manufacturing teams to ensure design manufacturability (DFM) and design for assembly (DFA).
- Resolve production-related mechanical issues and implement corrective actions.
- Develop manufacturing processes, assembly procedures, and quality control plans.
- Coordinate fabrication, machining, sheet metal, welding, and assembly activities.
- Conduct root cause analysis of manufacturing and field issues.
- Monitor production quality and implement continuous improvement initiatives.
- Support incoming inspection, production testing, and product qualification activities.
- Manage engineering change requests (ECRs) and engineering change orders (ECOs).
Testing & Validation
- Support environmental, vibration, thermal, ingress protection (IP), and qualification testing.
- Validate designs against performance, reliability, and military operational requirements.
- Analyze test results and implement design improvements.
Required Skills & Experience
- Strong proficiency in SolidWorks or equivalent CAD software.
- Comprehensive understanding of engineering drawings and GD&T (BS8888).
- Experience in R&D prototype design and product development.
- Knowledge of manufacturing processes including machining, sheet metal fabrication, welding, and assembly.
- Experience performing engineering calculations and design verification.
- Understanding of DFM, DFA, tolerance analysis, and production engineering principles.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
- Effective communication and presentation skills.
Preferred Experience
- Experience with JSS standards, IP ratings, environmental testing, and defense qualification requirements.
- Experience in turbomachinery, pressurized equipment, heat exchanger design, or ruggedized electromechanical systems.
- Experience working with defense, aerospace, automotive, industrial equipment, or high-reliability products.
- Familiarity with FEA, thermal analysis, and reliability engineering.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
- 3–8+ years of relevant experience in mechanical design, product development, and/or production engineering.
- Practical engineering and manufacturing experience preferred.
