JOB DESCRIPTION – MECHANICAL DESIGN ENGINEER

1. Job Purpose
We are looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer with strong hands-on knowledge of SolidWorks and practical exposure to machining components manufactured through CNC, VMC, and HMC machines.
The candidate will be responsible for developing 3D models, 2D manufacturing drawings, assemblies, detailed component drawings, and design modifications for precision-machined components and industrial machinery. The role requires close coordination with the Production, CNC Programming, Machining, Quality, Purchase, and Assembly teams to ensure that designs are technically practical and suitable for manufacturing.
2. Key Responsibilities
A. Mechanical Design & 3D Modelling
- Create detailed 3D part models and assemblies using SolidWorks.
- Develop mechanical components based on customer drawings, specifications, concepts, and engineering requirements.
- Prepare complex components suitable for CNC / VMC / HMC machining.
- Create accurate 2D manufacturing drawings from 3D models.
- Develop assembly drawings, exploded views, and component details wherever required.
- Modify existing designs based on engineering changes, production requirements, or customer feedback.
- Maintain proper drawing revision and document control.
B. Machining Component Design
- Design components considering machinability, tooling accessibility, work-holding, material selection, and machining sequence.
- Understand the practical limitations of CNC, VMC, HMC, turning, drilling, boring, milling, and grinding processes.
- Design components with appropriate:
- Machining allowances
- Tolerances
- Fits
- Surface finish requirements
- Hole specifications
- Threads
- Chamfers and radii
- Datum references
- Coordinate with CNC programmers and machinists to ensure the design is practically manufacturable.
- Review machining feasibility before releasing drawings for production.
C. Engineering Drawings & GD&T
- Prepare detailed production drawings with proper dimensions and tolerances.
- Apply and interpret GD&T as required.
- Specify appropriate geometric tolerances, surface finish, fits, and dimensional requirements.
- Read and interpret customer drawings and technical specifications.
- Ensure drawings contain all information required for manufacturing and inspection.
- Coordinate with the Quality Department regarding critical dimensions and inspection requirements.
D. Production & Shop-Floor Support
- Work closely with the production team to resolve design and manufacturing issues.
- Provide technical clarification to CNC/VMC/HMC operators and programmers.
- Analyze machining difficulties and recommend suitable design modifications.
- Participate in first-piece inspection and component development activities.
- Support production during new component development and prototype machining.
- Identify opportunities to simplify components and reduce manufacturing time and cost.
E. Design Improvement & Cost Optimization
- Review existing components and identify opportunities for design improvement and cost reduction.
- Optimize component design for ease of manufacturing and assembly.
- Reduce unnecessary machining operations wherever technically feasible.
- Suggest alternative materials, manufacturing processes, or component designs when appropriate.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives related to quality, productivity, and manufacturing efficiency.
3. SolidWorks Skills Required
The candidate should have good practical knowledge of:
- SolidWorks Part Modelling
- SolidWorks Assembly Modelling
- 2D Drawing Creation
- Sheet Metal – added advantage
- Weldments – added advantage
- Configurations and Design Tables
- Section views and detail views
- Assembly/exploded views
- Design modifications and revisions
- Basic understanding of SolidWorks Simulation is an advantage
4. Manufacturing Knowledge – Preferred
Candidates with practical exposure to the following will be strongly preferred:
- CNC machining
- VMC machining
- HMC machining
- CNC turning
- Milling
- Drilling
- Boring
- Grinding
- Precision component manufacturing
- Fixture and work-holding concepts
- Tooling and machining processes
Important: Candidates who have worked in a manufacturing environment and understand how a SolidWorks design is converted into an actual machined component will be preferred.
5. Technical Competencies
- Strong knowledge of mechanical engineering fundamentals.
- Good understanding of engineering materials.
- Knowledge of machining processes and manufacturing methods.
- Good understanding of dimensional tolerances and fits.
- Knowledge of GD&T.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings.
- Knowledge of standard mechanical components such as bearings, shafts, fasteners, gears, couplings, etc.
- Ability to identify design-for-manufacturing issues.
- Basic understanding of CNC machining and CAM processes will be an advantage.
Pay: ₹25,000.00 - ₹45,000.00 per month
