Key duties of a staff nurse include:Direct Patient Care & Clinical Duties
- Monitoring and Assessment: Conducting patient assessments, making bed-to-bed rounds, and monitoring patient conditions before and after surgery.
- Medication and Treatment: Administering medications, treatments, and therapies as prescribed by physicians.
- Hygiene and Safety: Ensuring patient comfort, safety, and hygiene, including managing, feeding, and changing patients.
- Emergency Response: Treating emergency injuries and acting quickly in critical situations.
- Procedures: Assisting doctors with procedures and, in psychiatric units, managing aggressive or suicidal patients.
Administrative and Ward Management
- Documentation: Maintaining meticulous, accurate patient records, reports, and nursing notes.
- Inventory Control: Checking, maintaining, and organizing ward supplies, equipment, and linens.
- Shift Management: Taking over charge from previous shifts and coordinating with the healthcare team.
- Environmental Maintenance: Ensuring the ward is clean, safe, and tidy.
Educational and Supervisory Roles
- Supervision: Supervising nurse aides, junior nurses, or nursing students in patient care tasks.
- Education: Teaching and educating patients and their relatives regarding care and, in some cases, providing clinical teaching for students.
- Orientation: Assisting in the orientation of new staff members.
