Position: Store In-Charge
Department: Stores / Site Operations
Reporting To: Project Manager / Site In-Charge / Management
Role Overview
The Store In-Charge will be responsible for the complete management and control of construction materials at the project site. The role involves receiving, inspecting, storing and issuing materials, maintaining accurate stock records, monitoring consumption and ensuring that materials are available as per project requirements while minimising wastage, damage and pilferage.
Key Responsibilities
1. Material Receiving
- Receive construction materials at the project site and verify quantities against purchase orders, delivery challans and invoices.
- Check materials for visible damage, quality and specifications before accepting them.
- Record all incoming materials accurately in the store register/system.
- Immediately report shortages, excess quantities, damages or quality discrepancies to the concerned person.
2. Material Storage & Management
- Ensure proper stacking and systematic storage of cement, steel, pipes, electrical materials, plumbing materials, hardware, tools and other construction materials.
- Ensure materials are stored safely and protected from damage, weather and unnecessary deterioration.
- Maintain proper identification and segregation of different materials.
- Follow FIFO wherever applicable, particularly for materials with a limited shelf life.
3. Material Issue
- Issue materials strictly against authorised material requisitions or instructions from the concerned site personnel.
- Maintain proper records of every material issued to contractors, workers or site teams.
- Record quantities, dates and the department/contractor to whom materials are issued.
- Ensure that unauthorised or undocumented material movement does not take place.
4. Inventory & Stock Control
- Maintain daily stock records and ensure that physical stock matches book/system records.
- Conduct regular physical stock verification.
- Monitor consumption of major construction materials and highlight unusual or excessive consumption.
- Maintain minimum stock levels and inform the Project Manager/Purchase Department well in advance of upcoming requirements.
- Track slow-moving, surplus, damaged and unused materials.
5. Site Coordination
- Coordinate with the Project Manager, Site Engineers, Purchase Department, Accounts and contractors regarding material requirements.
- Review upcoming site requirements and ensure timely availability of materials.
- Coordinate material unloading and ensure proper placement in the designated storage area.
- Assist the site team in tracking material consumption against project requirements.
6. Tools & Equipment
- Maintain records of tools, equipment and other assets issued to workers and contractors.
- Track return of tools and equipment.
- Report missing, damaged or unreturned items immediately.
- Ensure proper storage and maintenance of reusable tools and equipment.
7. Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain inward and outward registers, material requisitions, issue slips, delivery challans and stock records.
- Prepare daily/weekly/monthly stock statements as required.
- Maintain material-wise consumption and balance records.
- Assist management in periodic stock audits and reconciliation.
- Keep all store-related documents properly filed and readily accessible.
8. Loss & Wastage Control
- Take responsibility for preventing pilferage, unauthorised removal and unnecessary wastage of materials.
- Monitor material handling and storage practices at the site.
- Report any suspected theft, shortage or misuse immediately to management.
- Ensure damaged materials are separately identified and reported.
Key Performance Indicators
- Accuracy of stock records and physical inventory.
- Minimum stock discrepancies and unexplained shortages.
- Timely availability of materials at site.
- Proper documentation of all inward and outward movements.
- Effective control of material wastage and pilferage.
- Timely reporting of material requirements and shortages.
- Proper storage, organisation and housekeeping of the store.
- Accountability for tools, equipment and materials under custody.
Skills & Competencies
- Experience in construction-site store management.
- Good knowledge of building construction materials.
- Basic computer knowledge and ability to maintain Excel/system-based records.
- Strong inventory and documentation skills.
- Good coordination and communication skills.
- Honest, responsible and highly accountable.
- Good attention to detail.
- Ability to work at an active construction site and coordinate with multiple teams.
Experience
Preferred: 3–5 years of experience as a Store In-Charge / Storekeeper in building construction or a similar project environment.
Important: The Store In-Charge will be responsible for the custody, proper recording and controlled movement of all materials, tools and equipment entrusted to the site store.
Pay: ₹18,000.00 - ₹25,000.00 per month
