A phlebotomist is a trained healthcare professional responsible for drawing blood from patients for diagnostic tests, donations, or transfusions. They are responsible for verifying patient identity, collecting samples via venipuncture or fingerstick, labeling specimens accurately, and ensuring patient comfort and safety, primarily working in hospitals, labs, and donor centers
Key Responsibilities
- Specimen Collection: Perform venipuncture and capillary punctures on patients of all ages, including babies, children, and the elderly.
- Patient Care & Safety: Identify patients, explain procedures, reduce anxiety, and follow strict infection control/sterilization protocols.
- Labeling and Documentation: Accurately label vials, enter data into electronic medical records (EMR), and match specimens to patient records.
- Equipment Maintenance: Maintain, sanitize, and stock equipment such as needles, tubes, and vials.
