Core Roles & Responsibilities1. CAD Modeling and Drafting
This is the "bread and butter" of a junior designer. You will spend a significant portion of your time creating digital blueprints.
- 3D Modeling: Developing detailed 3D parts and assemblies using software like SolidWorks, CATIA, or Creo.
- 2D Technical Drawings: Converting 3D models into 2D shop drawings with proper views, sections, and annotations.
- GD&T Application: Applying Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing to ensure parts fit together correctly during assembly.
2. Design Documentation & Management
Engineering is as much about the "paper trail" as it is about the hardware.
- BOM Creation: Maintaining the Bill of Materials (BOM), ensuring every nut, bolt, and custom part is accounted for.
- Engineering Change Notices (ECN): Documenting modifications made to existing designs to improve performance or reduce costs.
- Technical Reports: Assisting in writing manuals or assembly instructions for the manufacturing floor.
3. Analysis and Validation
Before a part is made, you have to prove it won't fail.
- FEA Support: Performing basic Finite Element Analysis to check for stress points or deformations under load.
- Tolerance Stack-up: Calculating how small variations in part sizes might affect the final assembly.
- Prototyping: Working with 3D printers or CNC shops to create physical samples for testing.
4. Collaboration and Manufacturing Support
You act as the bridge between an idea and a physical object.
- DFM/DFA: Learning to design for Manufacturability and Assembly, ensuring parts aren't unnecessarily difficult or expensive to build.
- Vendor Coordination: Communicating with suppliers to source standard components (like bearings or motors) and checking their specifications.
- Cross-functional Meetings: Sitting in on design reviews with senior engineers to learn how to defend your design choices.
