Purpose of Classification:
Inspects, repairs, and maintains fire safety equipment and systems in accordance with applicable fire codes. Working conditions include restricted movement, air contamination, lifting, or carrying heavy objects.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
This is first in a series of four classifications and is a semi-skilled and entry level classification. This classification typically reports to the Fire Equipment Technician Lead.
Examples of Duties:
- Inspects, repairs, and tests fire extinguishers using hand tools, hydrostatic test equipment, and monitoring devices.
- Dismantles extinguishers and examines mechanical parts, extinguishing agents, and expelling means; replaces worn or damaged parts.
- Cleans extinguishers and recharges them with approved materials.
- Inspects, tests, and repairs systems such as smoke detectors, sprinklers, and dry stand pipe systems, and pull systems.
- Assists in fire safety inspection.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of inspection, repair, maintenance, and testing techniques for fire safety equipment and systems.
- Skill in the inspection, repair, maintenance, and testing techniques for fire safety equipment and systems.
Minimum Qualifications:
Three years of experience in the testing, repair, inspection, and maintenance of fire safety equipment; OR, Associate's degree in Fire Science AND one year of experience in the inspection, repair, and maintenance of fire safety equipment and systems; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved.
