About the Role
We are looking for an experienced Database Administrator/Engineer to own and scale a core production database handling large-scale, high-volume transactional data. The ideal candidate will ensure high query performance, system reliability, and strong data security as data volume continues to grow.
Key ResponsibilitiesPerformance & Optimization
- Diagnose and fix slow-running queries on large-scale transaction tables
- Design and implement indexing strategies, table partitioning (date-wise/region-wise), and query rewriting for high-volume datasets
- Set up materialized views, caching layers, and archiving strategies for historical data (cold vs hot data separation)
- Monitor query execution plans and proactively resolve bottlenecks before they affect live operations
- Define and enforce database schema design best practices for new modules and features
Scalability & Architecture
- Plan for horizontal/vertical scaling of database servers (on-premise or cloud, as applicable)
- Recommend and implement read-replica setups, connection pooling, and load distribution for high-concurrency access
- Work with backend/infra teams to design data pipelines that can handle real-time data ingestion at scale
Security & Compliance
- Implement role-based access control (RBAC) and least-privilege access across all database users
- Set up encryption at rest and in transit for sensitive data
- Conduct regular security audits, vulnerability assessments, and patch management
- Ensure compliance with applicable data protection regulations (e.g., DPDP Act, 2023, or equivalent)
- Set up automated backup, disaster recovery, and failover procedures for zero data loss
Operations & Monitoring
- Set up monitoring/alerting (e.g., for slow queries, disk usage, replication lag) using tools like Prometheus/Grafana or equivalent
- Maintain documentation of database architecture, schema, and runbooks
- Collaborate with development teams to review and approve database-impacting code changes before deployment
Required Skills & Experience
- Minimum 2 years of hands-on experience as a DBA/Database Engineer, with experience managing large-scale production databases
- Strong expertise in PostgreSQL or MySQL (PostgreSQL preferred for geospatial/time-series data)
- Proven experience with query optimization, indexing strategies, and partitioning on large tables
- Experience with database deployment and tuning (on-premise or cloud)
- Familiarity with time-series/geospatial data (PostGIS is a plus)
- Working knowledge of database security practices — encryption, RBAC, audit logging
- Experience with backup/replication tools (pg_basebackup, WAL-G, mysqldump, or equivalent)
- Comfortable working with high-throughput, real-time data ingestion (Kafka/message queues experience is a plus)
Certifications (Preferred/Required)
- Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA) or Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE) — Required, for Linux server management and on-prem DB hosting
- PostgreSQL Certified Professional / EDB Certified Associate, or equivalent for MySQL (Oracle MySQL Database Administrator) — Required
- AWS/Azure/GCP Database Specialty certification (e.g., AWS Certified Database – Specialty) — Preferred, if hybrid/cloud setup is involved
- CompTIA Security+ or equivalent — Preferred, for database/infra security fundamentals
- CKA (Certified Kubernetes Administrator) — Good to have, if DB is containerized/orchestrated
Good to Have
- Experience in transport/logistics/IoT/smart city or similar high-volume data systems
- Scripting skills (Python/Bash) for automation of DB maintenance tasks
- Experience with monitoring stacks (Grafana, Prometheus, pgAdmin, Percona Toolkit)
