Job Purpose:
To supervise and control melting operations for producing quality molten metal (SG Iron, Grey Iron, etc.) as per production schedules, ensuring process consistency, safety, and metallurgical standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Melting Operations Supervision:
- Oversee the complete melting process using induction furnaces or cupola (as applicable).
- Ensure charge preparation and metal melting follow specified recipes and procedures.
- Monitor furnace parameters, tapping temperatures, and pouring schedules.
- Raw Material & Charge Mix Management:
- Verify and prepare charge materials including pig iron, scrap, ferro alloys, and returns.
- Ensure proper batching and traceability of charge mix based on metallurgical requirements.
- Control alloy additions and inoculation practices to achieve desired chemistry.
- Quality & Metallurgy Control:
- Coordinate with the quality/metallurgy team for sampling and chemical composition analysis.
- Take corrective actions in case of deviations in chemistry or temperature.
- Maintain consistency in melt quality for repeatable casting results.
- Manpower & Shift Management:
- Allocate duties to melting operators, helpers, and furnace staff.
- Supervise shift activities and ensure efficient utilization of manpower.
- Conduct on-the-job training for melting crew on best practices and safety.
- Furnace & Equipment Maintenance:
- Ensure furnaces, ladles, preheaters, and pouring tools are maintained and preheated properly.
- Coordinate with maintenance for timely repairs, relining, and servicing.
- Monitor refractory life and ladle preparation.
- Safety & Compliance:
- Enforce safety measures during charging, melting, and pouring operations.
- Ensure all workers wear proper PPE and follow SOPs.
- Comply with environmental and statutory regulations related to melting operations.
- Documentation & Reporting:
- Maintain daily production and melting logbooks.
- Record melt timings, charge details, temperatures, chemical reports, and rejections.
- Provide reports to Production Manager and coordinate for continuous improvement.
Qualifications & Skills:
- Diploma / B.E. in Metallurgy / Mechanical Engineering / Foundry Technology.
- 5–10 years of experience in melting operations (SG Iron / CI / DI casting).
- Knowledge of induction furnace operation and charge calculation.
- Familiarity with spectrometer analysis, slag removal, and ladle handling.
- Ability to read melt shop schedules and coordinate pouring activities.
Preferred Attributes:
- Experience with modern foundry ERP systems and data logging.
- Familiarity with ISO 9001, IATF 16949, or other quality standards.
- Leadership and communication skills for managing melting crews.
