Key Responsibilities
- Overall supervision of the Microbiology Department and day-to-day laboratory activities.
- Plan, assign and monitor microbiological testing of food, water, pharmaceutical, cosmetic and other samples.
- Review and authorize microbiological test results and reports.
- Ensure testing is performed according to approved SOPs, standard methods and laboratory procedures.
- Supervise tests such as:
- Total Plate Count / Total Viable Count
- Yeast & Mold Count
- Coliform / E. coli
- Salmonella
- Staphylococcus aureus
- Enterobacteriaceae
- Other specified pathogenic microorganisms
- Water microbiology
- Environmental monitoring / swab testing
- Supervise sample preparation, media preparation, sterilization and culture procedures.
- Maintain and review microbiology records, worksheets, registers and test reports.
- Ensure proper media quality control, culture maintenance and sterility controls.
- Monitor autoclave, incubators, biosafety equipment and other microbiology instruments.
- Ensure proper calibration, verification and maintenance of microbiology equipment.
- Investigate abnormal results, contamination, OOS/OOT results and deviations.
- Conduct or supervise method verification/validation where applicable.
- Ensure compliance with NABL ISO/IEC 17025 requirements.
- Prepare for and coordinate NABL assessments, audits and technical inspections.
- Train junior microbiologists, microbiologists and trainees.
- Review the technical competency of microbiology staff.
- Ensure proper laboratory biosafety, GLP and contamination-control practices.
- Coordinate with the Food/Chemical/QA departments when samples require combined testing.
- Review customer requirements, test methods and applicable specifications before analysis.
- Ensure reports are technically correct before release/authorization.

Qualification
A likely qualification profile would be:
- M.Sc. Microbiology / Biotechnology / Life Sciences or equivalent.
- Strong practical experience in food, pharmaceutical, environmental or water microbiology.
- Experience with NABL/ISO 17025 laboratory systems.
- Good knowledge of microbiological standard methods, SOPs and documentation.
- Experience in handling a microbiology team.
