The Purchase Engineer is responsible for sourcing, purchasing, and ensuring the timely availability of raw materials, components, consumables, and services required for gearbox manufacturing operations. The role involves vendor development, cost negotiation, procurement planning, and coordination with production, stores, quality, and finance departments.
Key Responsibilities
- Procure raw materials, bought-out components, consumables, and services as per production requirements.
- Generate and process Purchase Requisitions (PR) and Purchase Orders (PO).
- Identify, evaluate, and develop new suppliers to ensure quality, cost, and delivery targets.
- Negotiate prices, payment terms, and delivery schedules with suppliers.
- Follow up with vendors to ensure timely material delivery.
- Coordinate with production planning and stores departments to maintain optimum inventory levels.
- Monitor supplier performance regarding quality, delivery, and cost.
- Resolve supply-related issues and expedite urgent requirements.
- Conduct market research to identify cost-saving opportunities and alternate sources.
- Maintain procurement records, supplier databases, and purchase documentation.
- Support audits related to procurement and vendor management.
- Ensure compliance with company policies and procurement procedures.
Qualification
- Bachelor's Degree / Diploma in Mechanical Engineering.
- 2–5 years of experience in Purchase/Procurement, preferably in manufacturing industries.
- Experience in gearbox, engineering, automotive, or industrial equipment manufacturing preferred.
Required Skills
- Knowledge of mechanical components, raw materials, and engineering drawings.
- Understanding of procurement processes and vendor management.
- Strong negotiation and cost analysis skills.
- Knowledge of ERP systems and MS Excel.
- Ability to read technical drawings and specifications.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
Preferred Skills
- Experience in sourcing gears, shafts, bearings, castings, forgings, motors, and industrial components.
- Knowledge of inventory management and supply chain processes.
- Vendor development and cost reduction experience.
