A Shipyard Pipe Fitter is a skilled tradesperson responsible for the fabrication, installation, assembly, maintenance, and repair of various piping systems onboard marine vessels and within shipyard facilities.
- Blueprint Interpretation: Read and interpret complex marine piping drawings, General Arrangement (GA) drawings, isometrics, and P&ID diagrams.
- Fabrication & Fitting: Measure, cut, thread, bend, and fit pipes made of various materials such as carbon steel, stainless steel, copper-nickel (Cu-Ni), and galvanized iron (GI).
- Installation: Layout and install piping systems, including the mounting of pipe supports, hangers, brackets, and clamps.
- Assembly: Install and align valves, pumps, flanges, gaskets, and other fittings.
- Testing & Maintenance: Perform hydrostatic and pressure testing to detect leaks and ensure system integrity. Carry out repairs and retrofits during vessel dry docking.
- Collaboration: Coordinate with welders for pipe joint welding and work closely with supervisors and marine engineers to ensure compliance with standards.
Requirements & Skills
- Education: Typically requires an ITI / Trade Certificate or a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering.
- Experience: Most shipyard roles require 3 to 5+ years of specific marine or shipyard pipe fitting experience.
- Physical Stamina: Ability to work in confined spaces (like engine rooms or tanks), at heights, and in varying weather conditions.
- Technical Proficiency: Knowledge of pipe bending machines, threading tools, and welding processes (often assisting with or performing tack welding).
