Job Summary
The Plumbing Design Engineer is responsible for the design, development, coordination, and documentation of plumbing and fire protection systems for residential, commercial, industrial, and institutional projects. The role involves preparing engineering calculations, design drawings, specifications, and ensuring compliance with applicable codes, standards, and project requirements. The Plumbing Design Engineer works closely with multidisciplinary teams, clients, architects, and contractors to deliver efficient and cost-effective plumbing solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Design plumbing systems including domestic cold and hot water distribution, sanitary drainage, stormwater drainage, venting systems, and specialty plumbing systems.
- Prepare plumbing layouts, schematics, riser diagrams, and detailed construction drawings using CAD and BIM software.
- Perform engineering calculations related to pipe sizing, fixture unit calculations, pump selection, water storage requirements, and drainage capacities.
- Coordinate plumbing designs with architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, and fire protection disciplines.
- Review project requirements, specifications, and contract documents to ensure compliance with client expectations and regulatory standards.
- Ensure designs comply with applicable local and international plumbing codes, standards, and authority requirements.
- Participate in design meetings and provide technical support during project planning and execution.
- Review shop drawings, material submittals, and requests for information (RFIs) submitted by contractors.
- Conduct site visits and inspections as required to verify installation compliance and resolve technical issues.
- Assist in preparing project cost estimates, technical reports, and engineering documentation.
- Identify opportunities for design optimization, sustainability, and value engineering.
- Support commissioning activities and project close-out documentation.
- Mentor junior engineers and drafting personnel when required.
Qualifications and Education
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Building Services Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Professional engineering registration or licensure is preferred, where applicable.
- Additional certifications in plumbing design or BIM coordination are considered an advantage.
Experience Requirements
- Minimum of 1- 5 years of experience in plumbing design within an MEP consulting, engineering, or construction environment.
- Demonstrated experience designing plumbing systems for commercial, residential, hospitality, healthcare, industrial, or mixed-use developments.
- Experience working on multidisciplinary projects from concept through construction stages.
Technical Skills
- Proficiency in AutoCAD and BIM software such as Revit.
- Knowledge of plumbing design principles, hydraulic calculations, and system sizing methodologies.
- Familiarity with relevant codes and standards, such as IPC, UPC, NFPA, ASPE guidelines, and local authority regulations.
- Experience using engineering software and calculation tools related to plumbing design.
- Ability to review and interpret technical drawings, specifications, and construction documents.
- Strong understanding of coordination processes within MEP projects.
