Job Title: Labor Room Staff

Job Summary : The labor room staff nurse is responsible for providing high-quality nursing care to women during the antenatal, intrapartum (labor & delivery), and immediate postpartum periods, ensuring patient safety and comfort. The role involves working collaboratively with obstetricians, pediatricians, anaesthetists, and other clinical professionals to support normal and complicated childbirths in accordance with hospital.
Key Responsibility:
Clinical & Patient Care
- Monitor maternal and fetal vital signs, including BP, pulse, temperature, FHS, contractions, etc., throughout labor.
- Provide direct nursing care to laboring patients, including preparation, support, and comfort measures.
- Assist obstetricians and midwives during normal and complicated deliveries (vaginal and operative), including C-sections as required.
- Administer medications, IV fluids, and treatments as per doctors’ orders.
- Provide immediate newborn care after delivery and support initial breastfeeding.
- Maintain a sterile and safe labor room environment; prepare equipment, instruments, and supplies for procedures.
- Recognize and respond promptly to obstetric emergencies such as fetal distress or postpartum hemorrhage.
Documentation & Compliance
- Maintain accurate patient records, delivery charts, partographs, and nursing documentation.
- Adhere to infection control, patient safety, and hygiene standards (NABH norms).
Coordination & Support
- Communicate effectively with patients, family members, and the multidisciplinary healthcare team.
- Assist in patient admission, transfer, and discharge activities in collaboration with other departments.
Qualification:
· Diploma / Certificate in General Nursing & Midwifery or B.Sc. Nursing from a recognized institution.
· Knowledge in BLS is mandatory.
Experience:
1. Overall: 5 years of experience working in labor in hospital settings.
2. Relevant: 2 years of hands-on experience in labor, delivery, or maternity care settings.
3. Age: 23-25 years.
4. Strong knowledge to ensure familiarity with hospital protocols, patient handling, emergencies, and hygiene/infection control.
5. Freshers are also applicable.

1. Communication: Clear communication with patients, families, and healthcare team (doctors, pediatricians, anaesthetists). Ability to explain procedures, progress, and instructions in understandable terms.

Technical Skills:
1. Maternal & Fetal Assessment: Monitor maternal vital signs (BP, pulse, and temperature) and fetal heart rate during labor. Interpret fetal monitoring patterns and recognize warning signs of distress.
2. Labor & Delivery Procedures: Assist doctors/midwives during normal vaginal births, assisted deliveries, and cesarean sections. Administer medications, IV fluids, and pain management interventions safely.
3. Emergency & Critical Response: Recognize and respond quickly to obstetric emergencies such as postpartum hemorrhage, cord prolapse, and shoulder dystocia. Perform newborn care and neonatal resuscitation if required.
4. Documentation & Systems: Maintain accurate patient records, delivery notes, and clinical charts. Competence in using hospital information systems/electronic records (EMR/EHR) may be required.
5. Infection Control & Safety: Follow infection prevention protocols and maintain aseptic techniques consistently. Ensure safe handling of equipment, waste disposal, and labor room sanitation. Prepare and maintain a sterile delivery environment and equipment.
6. Other Practical Skills: Observation and early identification of complications. And knowledge of pharmacology related to obstetric care (common labor drugs).
