We are an ESG and sustainability consulting company providing advisory services in Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA), Environmental and Social Due Diligence (ESDD), EHS audits, ESG compliance, and sustainability risk management across infrastructure, renewable energy, manufacturing, industrial, and development sectors.
We are looking to engage an experienced freelance EHS professional to support EHS audits, due diligence assignments, compliance reviews, and technical reporting for a range of projects and operational facilities.
Role Overview
The Freelance EHS Consultant will support the company on project-based assignments involving Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) audits, EHS compliance reviews, EHS due diligence, and ESG assessments. The role requires independent execution of field visits, facility inspections, documentation reviews, identification of EHS gaps, and preparation of high-quality technical reports.
The ideal candidate should have strong knowledge of Indian EHS regulations, practical experience in conducting EHS audits across sectors, and a sound understanding of international environmental and social frameworks including IFC Performance Standards and World Bank Group EHS Guidelines.
Key Responsibilities
EHS Audits and Site Assessments
- Conduct Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) audits for industrial, infrastructure, renewable energy, and operational facilities.
- Undertake EHS compliance assessments against applicable Indian regulatory requirements and international standards.
- Conduct field inspections, site walkthroughs, worker interviews, and review of EHS management systems and documentation.
- Identify EHS risks, non-compliances, unsafe conditions, and improvement opportunities.
- Evaluate occupational health and safety practices, emergency preparedness, waste management, hazardous material handling, contractor management, and incident management systems.
EHS Due Diligence and ESG Support
- Support Environmental and Social Due Diligence (ESDD) assignments from an EHS perspective.
- Review project and operational facilities against IFC Performance Standards and applicable EHS guidelines.
- Assess environmental and occupational risks associated with project construction and operational activities.
- Identify corrective actions, mitigation measures, and compliance improvement recommendations.
- Support ESG and lender compliance assessments where required.
Technical Report Writing
- Prepare detailed EHS audit reports, EHS due diligence reports, compliance assessment reports, and corrective action plans.
- Document audit observations, risk findings, regulatory gaps, and recommendations in a clear and professional manner.
- Develop audit checklists, risk matrices, and compliance tracking tools where required.
- Ensure timely submission of high-quality deliverables aligned with client and lender expectations.
Coordination and Client Interaction
- Coordinate with project teams, facility representatives, and clients during planning and execution of assignments.
- Participate in client meetings, technical discussions, and debriefing sessions.
- Support internal ESG teams through technical inputs related to EHS compliance and risk management.
- Maintain professional communication and represent the company during site engagements.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree in Environmental Engineering, Industrial Safety, Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, or related discipline.
- Minimum 7 years of relevant professional experience in EHS audits, EHS compliance, industrial safety, or ESG consulting assignments.
- Experience working as an independent consultant or on project-based assignments will be preferred.

Technical Competencies
- Strong experience in conducting EHS audits and compliance assessments.
- Proven expertise in EHS audit report writing and corrective action planning.
- Good understanding of:
- IFC Performance Standards;
- World Bank Group EHS Guidelines;
- International EHS and ESG frameworks;
- Occupational health and safety management systems.
- Well acquainted with Indian environmental, health, and safety regulations and statutory compliance requirements.
- Familiarity with risk assessment methodologies, incident investigation, emergency preparedness, and contractor safety management.
Professional Skills
- Strong analytical and observational skills.
- Excellent technical writing and communication skills.
- Ability to independently manage field assignments and deliverables.
- Strong interpersonal and coordination capabilities.
- Willingness to travel extensively for audits and site visits.
- Ability to work within timelines and manage multiple assignments simultaneously.
Preferred Experience
- Experience in renewable energy, manufacturing, infrastructure, chemicals, or heavy industry sectors.
- Exposure to lender-funded projects and international ESG requirements.
- Experience supporting ESIA, ESDD, or sustainability-related assignments.
- Certifications in occupational health and safety or lead auditor qualifications will be an added advantage.
Engagement Expectations
- The consultant will be engaged on an assignment or project basis depending on project requirements.
- Travel to project sites across India may be required.
- The consultant should be capable of independently conducting audits and preparing reports with limited supervision.
- Availability for short-duration assignments and quick turnaround deliverables will be preferred.
