Tech Design Development – Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)

About the Role
We are hiring a senior technical professional to lead the end-to-end design and development of grid-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).
Candidate will own BESS system architecture, engineering specifications, battery and inverter sizing, thermal integration, electrical studies, protection design, grid compliance, and technical coordination from initial concept through commissioning.
The role will collaborate with specialists in Power Electronics, Thermal Management, Controls, and Grid Integration while contributing to the development of strong in-house BESS design capabilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Define complete BESS system architecture, including battery pack topology, BMS configuration, PCS/inverter sizing, EMS strategy, and thermal-management integration.
- Prepare system block diagrams, single-line diagrams, P&IDs, wiring diagrams, control schematics, and installation drawings.
- Conduct battery sizing, power and energy calculations, cycle-life assessments, and thermal-load analysis.
- Evaluate and select suitable battery chemistry, including LFP and other lithium-ion configurations.
- Lead load-flow, short-circuit, grounding, voltage-drop, harmonic, and arc-flash studies.
- Develop system-protection strategies covering over-current, over-voltage, under-voltage, anti-islanding, and fault ride-through.
- Ensure compliance with applicable grid and safety standards, including IEEE 1547, FERC 661, NFPA 855, IEC 62619, and UL 9540.
- Coordinate with OEMs, EPC contractors, system integrators, suppliers, and customers for technical reviews and design finalisation.
- Support FAT, SAT, prototype testing, site commissioning, and system-performance validation.
- Drive design optimisation and cost reduction through component selection, design simplification, and supplier optimisation.
- Mentor technical specialists and establish reusable design standards, engineering processes, and documentation libraries.
Required Qualifications
- B.Tech or M.Tech in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, Energy Systems, or a related discipline.
- 7–9 years of experience in power systems, electrical design, or BESS engineering.
- Minimum 4 years of direct experience designing grid-scale BESS or renewable-energy storage systems.
- Experience independently leading at least two utility-scale or commercial and industrial BESS projects.
- Strong knowledge of battery chemistry, BMS architecture, PCS sizing, EMS logic, and thermal-management integration.
- Practical experience in electrical studies, grid interconnection, and system-protection design.
- Advanced proficiency in ETAP, PSCAD, or equivalent electrical-analysis software.
- Working proficiency in AutoCAD or similar engineering-drawing tools.
- Experience with MATLAB/Simulink for power-system or EMS modelling.
- Demonstrated experience taking designs from technical specification through prototype, testing, and field commissioning.
Preferred Experience
- Utility-scale, commercial and industrial, microgrid, or hybrid solar-plus-storage projects.
- DC-coupled BESS configurations.
- Cost-optimisation initiatives producing measurable savings.
- Technical leadership, mentoring, or coordination of multidisciplinary engineering teams.
- Experience working with battery OEMs, PCS manufacturers, EPC companies, and grid utilities.
- Professional Engineering certification or relevant IEEE credentials.
