Qualification
- B.E./B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering (Mandatory)
- M.E./M.Tech in Mechanical Engineering or Design Engineering will be an added advantage.
- Certification in CAD/CAE software, Project Management, Lean Manufacturing, or Six Sigma is preferred.
Job Summary
The Design Head will lead the Design & Engineering Department and be responsible for the complete engineering lifecycle of pharmaceutical process equipment—from concept development and detailed engineering to manufacturing support, installation, commissioning, and product lifecycle management.
The role requires strong leadership, technical expertise, and strategic vision to ensure innovative, cost-effective, GMP-compliant, and customer-focused engineering solutions while driving continuous improvement, product standardization, and engineering excellence.
Key Responsibilities
Engineering Leadership
- Lead, mentor, and manage the Design & Engineering team, including Design Engineers and Draftsmen.
- Define engineering standards, design procedures, and best practices.
- Allocate engineering resources and monitor project workloads to ensure timely completion of deliverables.
- Conduct technical reviews, performance evaluations, and skill development programs.
- Foster a culture of innovation, accountability, and continuous improvement.
Product Design & Development
- Lead the design and development of pharmaceutical process equipment and complete process systems.
- Review and approve:
- 3D Models
- General Arrangement (GA) Drawings
- Fabrication Drawings
- Assembly Drawings
- Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs)
- Bills of Materials (BOM)
- Ensure all designs comply with GMP, ASME, ISO, PED (where applicable), and customer specifications.
- Drive value engineering, modular design, standardization, and product optimization.
- Lead new product development initiatives and engineering innovation programs.
Project Engineering
- Coordinate with Production, Projects, Procurement, QA/QC, Automation, Sales, and Service departments.
- Participate in customer technical discussions, design reviews, URS review meetings, and project kick-off meetings.
- Ensure engineering deliverables are released according to project schedules.
- Provide technical leadership during Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT), Site Acceptance Tests (SAT), installation, commissioning, and validation activities.
- Resolve technical challenges throughout project execution.
Technical Excellence
- Review engineering calculations, equipment sizing, mechanical design, process calculations, and material selection.
- Ensure designs are optimized for manufacturability, reliability, maintainability, and cost efficiency.
- Lead Engineering Change Management (ECN/ECR) activities.
- Identify opportunities for automation and digital engineering improvements.
Quality & Compliance
- Ensure all engineering activities comply with:
- ISO 9001
- GMP
- ASME
- PED (where applicable)
- Customer Specifications
- Internal Quality Standards
- Approve engineering documents, technical specifications, and revision changes.
- Support internal audits, customer audits, and third-party inspections.
- Ensure proper engineering document control and revision management.
Strategic Responsibilities
- Develop long-term engineering strategies aligned with business goals.
- Introduce advanced engineering tools, CAD technologies, automation software, and digital workflows.
- Standardize products, components, and engineering practices to reduce lead times and manufacturing costs.
- Drive continuous improvement and Lean Engineering initiatives.
- Support Make-or-Buy decisions and product cost optimization.
Customer & Vendor Coordination
- Interface with customers, consultants, suppliers, and third-party inspection agencies.
- Review customer specifications, User Requirement Specifications (URS), and technical contracts.
- Evaluate and approve vendor technical submissions and manufacturing drawings.
- Provide technical support to the Sales team during proposal preparation, technical clarification meetings, and tender evaluations.
- Support customer visits, FATs, audits, and project discussions.
Required Skills
- Expertise in pharmaceutical process equipment design and engineering.
- Strong knowledge of GMP, ASME, ISO 9001, hygienic equipment design, pressure vessel codes, and process engineering.
- Advanced proficiency in:
- AutoCAD
- SolidWorks
- Autodesk Inventor
- AutoCAD Plant 3D (Preferred)
- Thorough understanding of fabrication, machining, welding, sheet metal, and stainless steel (SS304 & SS316L) equipment.
- Strong knowledge of:
- P&IDs
- Process Engineering

- Pressure Vessel Design
- Hygienic Piping Systems
- Excellent project planning, budgeting, scheduling, and resource management skills.
- Strong analytical, leadership, communication, and decision-making abilities.
