Senior Design Engineer & Costing Engineer – Racking & Shelving Industry
Job Overview
We are seeking an experienced Senior Design Engineer & Costing Engineer to join our team in the Racking and Shelving Industry. The ideal candidate will have a strong mechanical engineering background with hands-on experience in designing, engineering, and costing industrial racking and shelving systems for warehouse, logistics, and commercial applications.
This role involves end-to-end responsibility for product design, technical validation, estimation, and cost optimization while ensuring compliance with industry standards and customer requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
Design & Engineering
- Lead the design and development of racking and shelving systems from concept to production, including pallet racking, shelving, mezzanines and customized storage solutions.
- Analyze customer requirements, site conditions, load capacities and layout constraints to develop optimized design solutions.
- Prepare and review engineering drawings, technical specifications and Bills of Materials (BOM).
- Conduct design calculations, simulations, and testing to ensure compliance with safety, load, and performance standards.
- Continuously improve existing designs to enhance performance, safety, manufacturability, and cost efficiency.
- Provide technical support to production, installation, and project teams during manufacturing and execution.
- Stay updated with industry standards, codes, and best practices related to racking and shelving systems.
Costing & Estimation
- Prepare accurate project costing and estimations based on drawings, BOQs, BOMs, and customer specifications.
- Calculate material costs, fabrication costs, surface treatment (powder coating/galvanizing), installation, transportation, and overheads.
- Support the sales team with techno-commercial inputs, value engineering, and cost optimization proposals.
- Analyze cost variances and recommend design or process improvements to meet target pricing and margins.
- Assist in rate card preparation, pricing strategy, and cost benchmarking against competitors.
Collaboration & Leadership
- Collaborate closely with sales, marketing, production, procurement, and operations teams to ensure seamless project execution.
- Mentor and guide junior engineers, providing technical leadership and design review support.
- Act as a technical point of contact for customers, consultants, and internal stakeholders.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
- 2+ years of experience in design, engineering, and costing within the racking, shelving, or structural steel industry.
- Strong knowledge of mechanical design principles, load calculations, and safety standards.
- Proficiency in CAD tools such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or equivalent software.
- Hands-on experience with manufacturing processes including sheet metal fabrication, welding, and powder coating.
- Familiarity with relevant industry standards and regulations (OSHA, ANSI, FEM, IS codes).
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and cost-optimization skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects independently in a fast-paced environment.
