Mechanical Design Manager – Industrial Automation
Job Summary
The Mechanical Design Manager is responsible for leading the mechanical design and development activities for industrial automation projects. The role involves managing the design team, overseeing machine and automation system design, ensuring technical accuracy, coordinating with cross-functional departments, and supporting project execution from concept to commissioning.
Key Responsibilities
1. Mechanical Design & Development
- Lead the design and development of industrial automation machines, special purpose machines (SPM), conveyor systems, robotic cells, fixtures, and assembly systems.
- Prepare and review 3D models, manufacturing drawings, assembly drawings, and BOMs.
- Ensure designs meet customer specifications, safety standards, and manufacturing feasibility.
- Standardize design practices and maintain engineering documentation.
2. Project Management & Execution
- Coordinate with project, electrical, PLC, and production teams for smooth project execution.
- Monitor project timelines, design schedules, and deliverables.
- Support installation, machine trials, commissioning, and troubleshooting activities.
- Ensure timely completion of projects within budget and quality requirements.
3. Team Leadership & Resource Management
- Lead and mentor the mechanical design team.
- Assign tasks, review performance, and provide technical guidance.
- Develop team capabilities through training and knowledge sharing.
- Ensure effective workload planning and resource utilization.
4. Customer & Vendor Coordination
- Interact with customers for technical discussions, design approvals, and modifications.
- Coordinate with vendors and procurement teams for component selection and technical support.
- Evaluate vendor capabilities and support new vendor development.
5. Quality & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with industrial standards, machine safety norms, and company quality procedures.
- Conduct design reviews and risk assessments.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives for product reliability and manufacturability.
6. Cost Optimization & Innovation
- Identify opportunities for cost reduction and design optimization.
- Introduce innovative design concepts and automation solutions.
- Improve machine performance, efficiency, and maintainability.
Required Skills & Competencies
- Strong knowledge of industrial automation systems and machine design.
- Expertise in CAD software such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Creo, or Inventor.
- Good understanding of pneumatics, hydraulics, servo systems, conveyors, and robotics integration.
- Knowledge of fabrication processes, machining, and assembly practices.
- Strong leadership, project management, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
- Excellent communication and team coordination abilities.
Educational Qualification
- Bachelor’s Degree / Diploma in Mechanical Engineering.
Experience
- 8–15 years of experience in mechanical design and industrial automation.
- Minimum 3–5 years of experience in a leadership or managerial role preferred.
