Job Description – Duplex Grinder Machine Operator

Reporting To: Grinding Supervisor / Production Supervisor
1. Job Purpose
To operate Duplex Grinder Machines efficiently and safely for taper roller grinding operations while achieving production targets, dimensional accuracy, surface finish, and quality standards as per the Control Plan and SOP.
2. Key Responsibilities
- Operate Duplex Grinder machines as per approved SOP, Work Instructions and Control Plan.
- Set and adjust machine parameters such as:
- Grinding wheel speed
- Feed rate
- Dressing parameters
- Work rest / guide settings
- Grinding pressure and coolant flow
- Perform machine setting and minor adjustments as per product requirements.
- Ensure correct loading and unloading of taper rollers.
- Monitor machine performance during production and identify abnormal conditions.
- Check critical dimensions using instruments such as:
- Micrometer
- Vernier caliper
- Bore/plug gauges, where applicable
- Air gauges / dedicated gauges
- Surface roughness instruments, where required
- Maintain required dimension, geometry and surface-finish specifications.
- Conduct first-piece inspection and obtain approval before regular production, wherever applicable.
- Perform in-process inspection at defined frequencies.
- Immediately segregate and identify non-conforming components.
- Maintain production, rejection and inspection and downtime records.
- Ensure proper identification and traceability of components, bins and batches.
- Carry out routine machine cleaning, lubrication and basic autonomous maintenance.
- Monitor grinding wheels, dressing tools, coolant and consumables and report abnormalities.
- Coordinate with Quality and Maintenance teams for quality or machine-related issues.
- Follow 5S, PPE, safety rules and housekeeping standards.
- Minimize rejection, rework, tool consumption and machine downtime.
- Achieve daily production targets while maintaining quality and safety.
- Support continuous improvement activities such as Kaizen, productivity improvement and rejection reduction.
3. Quality Responsibilities
The operator shall ensure:
- Production is carried out strictly according to the Control Plan and drawing/specification.
- Correct machine/program/setting is used for the respective part number.
- No mixing of different part numbers or batches.
- Measuring instruments are used correctly and are within calibration validity.
- Defective components are properly segregated.
- Any abnormality or out-of-specification condition is immediately reported to the Supervisor/Quality Department.
5. Required Skills
- Practical knowledge of Duplex Grinding Machines.
- Basic understanding of taper roller grinding.
- Ability to read basic engineering drawings and specifications.
- Knowledge of measuring instruments and gauges.
- Understanding of grinding wheel dressing and basic grinding parameters.
- Basic knowledge of machine troubleshooting.
- Ability to identify common grinding defects such as:
- Dimension variation
- Taper
- Out-of-roundness
- Grinding burn
- Chatter marks
- Surface-finish issues
- Loading/burning marks
- Good discipline and attention to detail.
- Ability to work in shifts.
- Operate Duplex Grinder Machine as per approved SOP, Work Instructions, Control Plan and product specifications.
- Perform independent setting and matching of both-side grinding wheel angles according to the required component specification.
- Independently adjust left-side and right-side grinding wheel angles to achieve proper geometry, taper and dimensional requirements.
- Ensure both grinding wheels are correctly aligned and angle-matched independently before and during production.
- Verify wheel angle matching through first-piece inspection and required measuring methods before starting batch production.
- Make necessary independent corrections/adjustments to each grinding wheel angle based on inspection results and process variation.
- Monitor both grinding sides continuously to prevent unequal grinding, taper variation, profile mismatch and dimensional deviation.
- Set and adjust grinding parameters including:
- Grinding wheel angle – Left Side
- Grinding wheel angle – Right Side
- Wheel speed
- Feed rate
- Dressing parameters
- Work rest/guide settings
- Coolant flow
- Perform first-piece inspection and obtain Quality approval wherever applicable.
- Conduct regular in-process inspection to ensure both-side grinding dimensions and geometry remain within specification.
- Identify and correct common grinding defects such as taper variation, angle mismatch, chatter marks, grinding burn and surface-finish variation.
- Record machine settings and process parameters for traceability and repeatability.
- Coordinate with Quality and Maintenance teams in case of abnormality or inability to achieve required wheel-angle matching.
- Maintain machine cleanliness, basic lubrication and autonomous maintenance.
- Follow 5S, PPE, safety and housekeeping requirements.
- Achieve production targets while maintaining required quality and minimizing rejection, rework and downtime.
Specific Skill Requirement
Must be able to independently perform both-side grinding wheel angle setting, matching and correction, including understanding the effect of individual wheel-angle adjustments on taper, geometry, dimensions and surface finish.
Pay: ₹20,000.00 - ₹40,000.00 per month
