About Sense International India
Sense International India (Sense India) is the only national-level organisation dedicated to children and adults with deafblindness and multiple disabilities. Since 1997 we have supported education, communication, mobility, early intervention, vocational training and family guidance across India.
Our Sanand centre (Ahmedabad district) delivers direct services to children and adults who are Deaf, Blind or Deafblind / Multiple Disabilities (Db/MD) — assessment, individual teaching, caregiver support and home-based work when needed.
Role overview
The Assistant Special Educator works under the Centre Manager / Special Educator to assess, teach and support learners who are Deaf, Blind or Deafblind, prepare teaching-learning materials, document progress, and help families carry strategies into the home.
Key responsibilities
Working with students
- Assist in holistic assessment of current functioning (communication, vision/hearing use, motor, cognitive and daily-living skills)
- Support planning and delivery of one-to-one and small-group sessions as per each learner’s IEP
- Help prepare individual/group timetables and need-based TLM (tactile, visual, auditory and multi-sensory materials)
- Support learners to take part in purposeful classroom, ADL, mobility-foundation and leisure activities
- Guide caregivers to practise suggested strategies at home
- Maintain session notes and progress records
Programme support
- Contribute to IEP planning, review and documentation
- Support caregiver meetings and parent demonstrations
- Help plan and accompany accessible outings / field visits
- Provide home-based educational support in Sanand and nearby areas as required
- Support awareness / sensitisation activities when asked
Centre and team
- Follow Sense India’s safeguarding and child / vulnerable-adult protection policies
- Work without discrimination with learners and colleagues of all backgrounds
- Coordinate with the Special Educator, therapists and centre staff
- Support day-to-day classroom readiness and basic centre administration
- Any other related work agreed with the Centre Manager
Essential requirements
- Graduate in any stream; preference for disability / special education (VI, HI, ID, MD or Deafblindness)
- Diploma or higher in Special Education preferred; candidates completing RCI-recognised training may be considered
- Valid RCI registration (or eligibility / willingness to obtain and maintain it)
- Working knowledge of Indian Sign Language, Braille, tactile communication or a clear willingness to learn quickly on the job
- Basic MS Office for plans and reports
- Gujarati and Hindi essential; working English for documentation
- Patience, empathy and ability to follow a plan while adapting to each learner
Desirable
- 0–2 years with Deaf, Blind, Deafblind or multiple-disability learners (freshers with the right qualification and attitude are welcome)
- Familiarity with common assistive devices (hearing aids, low-vision aids, cane, AAC / object cues)
- Willingness to travel locally in Sanand / Ahmedabad district and occasionally for training
- Strong interpersonal skills with families and the team
Contract, salary and hours
- Full-time renewable two-year contract, including six months’ probation
- Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience
- Monday to Saturday; 2nd and 4th Saturday weekly off

Pay: ₹9,022.38 - ₹25,000.00 per month
