Job Summary
The Anesthesia Technician is responsible for assisting the anaesthesiologist in providing safe and efficient anaesthesia services for obstetric, gynecological, neonatal, pediatric, and general surgical procedures. The technician ensures that all anaesthesia equipment, medications, and monitoring devices are prepared, functional, and readily available while maintaining patient safety and infection control standards.
Roles and ResponsibilitiesPre-operative Responsibilities
- Prepare and check the anaesthesia machine before each procedure.
- Ensure the availability and proper functioning of oxygen, suction apparatus, ventilators, and monitoring equipment.
- Prepare anaesthesia drugs, airway equipment, IV fluids, and emergency medications under the supervision of the anaesthesiologist.
- Arrange pediatric, neonatal, and obstetric anaesthesia equipment according to the scheduled procedure.
- Verify the availability of emergency crash cart and difficult airway cart.
- Assist in preparing patients for anaesthesia by positioning, attaching monitors, and ensuring patient comfort.
Intra-operative Responsibilities
- Assist the anaesthesiologist during induction, maintenance, and recovery from anaesthesia.
- Provide airway assistance during intubation, extubation, and difficult airway management.
- Monitor the functioning of anaesthesia equipment throughout the procedure.
- Ensure continuous availability of anaesthesia drugs and consumables.
- Assist during spinal, epidural, and regional anaesthesia procedures.
- Support neonatal and pediatric resuscitation when required.
- Respond promptly during obstetric emergencies, neonatal emergencies, and code situations.
- Maintain strict aseptic techniques throughout surgical procedures.
Post-operative Responsibilities
- Assist in transferring patients safely to the Post Anaesthesia Care Unit (PACU).
- Clean, disinfect, and prepare anaesthesia equipment for the next procedure.
- Restock anaesthesia supplies and consumables.
- Dispose of biomedical waste according to hospital protocols.
- Report equipment malfunction immediately to the OT In-charge or Biomedical Department.
Equipment Management
- Perform daily checks of anaesthesia workstations.
- Ensure adequate stock of airway devices, breathing circuits, ET tubes, LMAs, laryngoscopes, masks, filters, and emergency equipment.
- Maintain calibration and preventive maintenance schedules for anaesthesia equipment.
- Document equipment checks and maintenance activities.
Infection Prevention and Safety
- Follow hospital infection prevention and control policies.
- Maintain aseptic handling of sterile equipment.
- Adhere to biomedical waste management guidelines.
- Ensure compliance with patient safety standards and OT protocols.
- Participate in fire safety and emergency preparedness drills.
Documentation
- Maintain anaesthesia equipment checklists.
- Record stock usage and inventory of anaesthesia consumables.
- Report incidents, equipment failures, and near-miss events.
- Complete departmental documentation accurately and on time.
Quality and Professional Responsibilities
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives.
- Attend departmental meetings and continuing education programs.
- Maintain confidentiality of patient information.
- Demonstrate professional behavior and effective communication with patients, attendants, and multidisciplinary teams.
- Comply with hospital policies, NABH standards, and statutory regulations.
Pediatric and Obstetric Care Responsibilities
- Assist in anaesthesia for cesarean sections, labor analgesia, gynecological surgeries, neonatal surgeries, and pediatric procedures.
- Prepare appropriately sized airway and monitoring equipment for neonates and children.
- Assist in neonatal resuscitation and stabilization.
- Ensure availability of neonatal warming equipment and pediatric emergency supplies.
- Support safe maternal and newborn care during surgical procedures.
