The Duty Medical Officer (DMO) is responsible for providing continuous medical care to patients admitted in the hospital, emergency department, ICU, and other clinical areas during assigned duty hours. The DMO performs patient assessment, stabilization, treatment, emergency management, documentation, and coordinates with consultants, nursing staff, and allied healthcare professionals to ensure safe and quality patient care while adhering to hospital protocols and ethical standards.
DAILY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assess, diagnose, and initiate treatment for OPD, IPD, and emergency patients.
- Attend all medical emergencies immediately and stabilize patients.
- Conduct ward rounds and review admitted patients.
- Monitor critically ill patients and escalate to consultants whenever necessary.
- Prescribe medications according to hospital protocols.
- Perform clinical examinations and document findings.
- Order and interpret laboratory and radiological investigations.
- Maintain accurate electronic and manual medical records.
- Prepare admission notes, progress notes, discharge summaries, and referral notes.
- Coordinate patient management with consultants and nursing staff.
- Perform emergency procedures such as CPR, airway management, IV cannulation, catheterization, and suturing within competency.
- Respond to Code Blue, Code Red, and other emergency alerts.
- Ensure informed consent is obtained whenever applicable.
- Counsel patients and relatives regarding treatment plans.
- Ensure infection prevention and patient safety protocols are followed.
- Participate in shift handover with complete clinical updates.
- Report adverse events and clinical incidents promptly.
- Ensure rational use of medicines and investigations.
- Maintain confidentiality of patient information.
- Follow NABH standards, hospital policies, and medical ethics.
MONTHLY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Participate in departmental clinical meetings.
- Attend CME programs and mandatory hospital training.
- Participate in mortality and morbidity meetings.
- Review departmental quality indicators.
- Support clinical audits and medical record audits.
- Participate in infection control surveillance activities.
- Submit required departmental reports.
- Assist in implementing quality improvement initiatives.
