Design & Engineering – Tank, Vessel & Fabrication Projects
1. JOB TITLE:-Senior Design Engineer

4. JOB PURPOSE
The Senior Design Engineer will be responsible for independently handling and managing 2D & 3D mechanical design activities for tanks, pressure vessels, fabricated equipment, piping-related components and other engineering projects.
The candidate must be capable of converting rough sketches, concepts, site information and customer requirements into professional engineering drawings, while ensuring dimensional accuracy, manufacturability, BOM accuracy, drawing quality and timely completion.
The position requires strong practical fabrication knowledge, engineering judgement, drawing-reading ability and complete accountability for assigned design work.
5. KEY TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITIES
A. CAD & DESIGN
- Prepare professional 2D and 3D drawings using:
- AutoCAD
- SolidWorks
- Other relevant CAD/design software as required.
- Prepare:
- GA Drawings
- Fabrication Drawings
- Detail/Part Drawings
- Assembly Drawings
- Manufacturing Drawings
- Modification/Revision Drawings
- Layout Drawings
- Piping-related drawings where applicable.
- Convert rough drawings, hand sketches, concepts or verbal technical requirements into professional engineering drawings.
- Modify existing drawings according to customer, production, inspection or site requirements.
- Maintain proper drawing numbering, revision control and drawing history.
B. TANK & VESSEL DESIGN KNOWLEDGE
The candidate should have practical design understanding of Tanks, Vessels and Fabricated Equipment, including:
- Shell
- Head / Dish End
- Cone
- Skirt
- Support arrangements
- Nozzles
- Manholes
- Flanges
- Couplings
- Inlet / Outlet connections
- Vent connections
- Drain connections
- Overflow connections
- Piping connections
- Internal components
- External attachments
- Lifting arrangements
- Platforms and ladders
- Structural supports
- Clamps and brackets
- Other fabricated components.
Candidate must understand how these components are designed, dimensioned, fabricated, assembled and practically installed.
6. ENGINEERING CALCULATION & DIMENSIONING
The candidate must have the ability to understand and perform/coordinate relevant engineering calculations such as:
- Thickness requirements
- Dimensional calculations
- Volume calculations
- Weight calculations
- Nozzle and opening dimensions
- Flange dimensions
- Pipe connection dimensions
- Support dimensions
- Material requirements
- Basic structural considerations
- Fabrication allowances
- Welding and fit-up considerations
- Manufacturing tolerances
- Other project-specific calculations.
The engineer must ensure that all dimensions shown on drawings are technically practical, accurate and suitable for manufacturing and fabrication.
Where design calculations require specialist approval or code-based engineering verification, the engineer must coordinate with the concerned engineering/technical authority.
7. DRAWING READING & UNDERSTANDING
The candidate must be capable of:
- Reading and understanding engineering drawings.
- Understanding customer drawings and specifications.
- Understanding fabrication drawings.
- Interpreting P&ID / layout information wherever applicable.
- Understanding dimensions, tolerances and technical notes.
- Identifying missing or conflicting dimensions.
- Identifying design/fabrication problems before releasing drawings.
- Understanding drawings from rough/basic sketches to detailed professional drawings.
- Communicating effectively with Production, QA/QC, Purchase, Project and Site teams.
8. BOM – BILL OF MATERIAL
The Senior Design Engineer shall be responsible for preparing and maintaining accurate BOM (Bill of Material) for assigned projects.
BOM shall include, wherever applicable:
- Raw material
- Plates
- Pipes
- Flanges
- Couplings
- Fittings
- Manholes
- Nozzles
- Structural sections
- Bolts, nuts and washers
- Gaskets
- Supports
- Internal components
- Purchased components
- Fabricated components
- Other project-specific items.
The engineer must ensure that the drawing and BOM are fully synchronized and that unnecessary material consumption is avoided.
9. PRACTICAL / FABRICATION KNOWLEDGE
Strong practical knowledge is mandatory.
The candidate must understand the practical application and fabrication requirements of components such as:
- Flanges
- Couplings
- Manholes
- Nozzles
- Inlet
- Outlet
- Vent
- Drain
- Pipe lines
- Pipe supports
- Elbows
- Tees
- Reducers
- Valves and related connections
- Brackets
- Supports
- Structural members
- Welding joints
- Fit-up arrangements
- Fabrication sequence.
The candidate should be able to identify whether a drawing is practically manufacturable and installable, not merely technically correct on CAD.
10. DRAWING COMPLETION & TIME MANAGEMENT
The engineer shall be responsible for completing assigned drawings within the defined project schedule/time limit.
Responsibilities include:
- Planning drawing work according to project priority.
- Completing drawings within committed deadlines.
- Giving timely status updates.
- Immediately informing management about any technical issue that may affect the schedule.
- Avoiding unnecessary delays.
- Prioritizing urgent production/site/customer requirements.
- Completing revisions within the required timeline.
- Maintaining proper work planning and daily productivity.
Delay caused by avoidable negligence, poor planning or lack of follow-up shall be treated as a performance/accountability issue.
11. DRAWING QUALITY & ERROR CONTROL
Before releasing any drawing, the engineer must properly verify:
- Dimensions
- Material specifications
- Thickness
- Component sizes
- Nozzle locations
- Flange details
- Pipe connections
- BOM
- Revision number
- Drawing number
- Welding details
- Assembly details
- Manufacturing feasibility
- Cross-references
- Customer/project requirements.
The objective shall be Right First Time (RFT) drawing preparation with minimum avoidable errors and revisions.
12. SITE VISIT / OTHER WORKING LOCATION
The candidate must be ready and willing to visit other company/customer/project working sites or locations whenever required for:
- Drawing clarification
- Site measurement
- Design correction
- Installation clarification
- Fabrication clarification
- Technical problem solving
- Modification requirements
- Customer discussion
- Inspection support
- Design verification.
The candidate must cooperate with the organization whenever technical presence at another working location is required.
13. COORDINATION WITH OTHER DEPARTMENTS
The Senior Design Engineer shall coordinate with:
- Production
- Fabrication

- Vendors/Subcontractors
- Management.
Any technical clarification affecting manufacturing, quality, cost or delivery must be communicated promptly to the concerned department.
14. ACCOUNTABILITY & RESPONSIBILITY
The Senior Design Engineer shall have complete accountability for assigned design activities, including:
- Drawing accuracy
- Drawing completion within schedule
- BOM accuracy
- Technical correctness
- Revision control
- Design coordination
- Production support
- Site support
- Timely correction of errors
- Proper documentation
- Confidentiality of company/customer information.
The engineer must take ownership of assigned projects from drawing preparation through final technical closure, as applicable.
15. DAILY WORK REPORT / STATUS REPORT
The engineer shall maintain and submit a Daily Work Report / Design Status Report containing, as applicable:
- Drawing completed
- Drawing under preparation
- Drawing revised
- BOM completed
- Pending technical issues
- Customer clarification required
- Production clarification
- Site-related issues
- Planned work for the next working day
- Project-wise progress.
16. PROJECT COMPLETION RESPONSIBILITY
Once a project/design activity is assigned, the employee shall remain responsible for completing the assigned work and providing the required technical handover, clarification and documentation.
The employee shall not leave incomplete design work without proper handover and management approval.
During resignation or separation, all:
- Drawings
- CAD files
- BOM
- Design calculations
- Project documents
- Revision details
- Technical correspondence
- Pending work status
must be properly handed over to the authorized person.
17. NOTICE PERIOD
Mandatory Notice Period: 45 Days.
The employee is required to provide a minimum 45 days' prior written notice before resignation, subject to the terms of the employment agreement and applicable company policy.
During the notice period, the employee must:
- Complete assigned responsibilities wherever reasonably possible.
- Provide proper technical handover.
- Complete pending drawings/revisions as directed.
- Transfer CAD files and project data.
- Explain pending technical matters.
- Support the replacement/authorized person during handover.
18. RUNNING PROJECT / JOB RESPONSIBILITY
Employees are expected to maintain professional responsibility toward running/active projects and assigned critical jobs.
Where an employee is handling an active project, critical drawing package or time-bound assignment, they shall not abandon the responsibility without completing the required handover and obtaining the necessary management clearance.
Any resignation/separation shall be handled as per the employment agreement, company policy and applicable law, including proper completion of handover obligations.
19. CONFIDENTIALITY & NDA
The employee shall be required to maintain strict confidentiality regarding:
- Company drawings
- Customer drawings
- CAD files
- 2D/3D models
- Design calculations
- BOM
- Manufacturing methods
- Technical specifications
- Project information
- Commercial information
- Customer information
- Proprietary designs
- Company processes and systems.
The employee may be required to sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA), Confidentiality Agreement and other applicable company agreements.
Company/customer technical information shall not be shared, copied, transferred or used outside authorized business purposes.

22. REQUIRED SKILLS & COMPETENCIES

- Tank/vessel/fabrication design understanding.

- Experience with pressure vessels/tanks.

23. MINIMUM EXPERIENCE
Experience: Preferably 5+ years of relevant experience in mechanical design, tank/vessel design, fabrication equipment or similar engineering industry.
Candidates with strong practical knowledge and proven independent design capability may be considered based on competency.
24. EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATION
B.E. / B.Tech. in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent relevant technical qualification.
25. IDEAL CANDIDATE PROFILE
The ideal candidate should be someone who can:
Understand → Design → Calculate → Draw → Prepare BOM → Coordinate → Correct → Support Fabrication → Support Site → Complete → Handover
The candidate should not be dependent on others for routine design activities and must be capable of independently handling assigned engineering/design work from rough concept/sketch to final professional manufacturing drawing.
