We are putting approximately 12,000 cubic feet of Gwalior sandstone onto a three-storey neoclassical house near Ahmedabad. Deep cornices, carved pediments, real rustication, chajjas. The stone is heavy and handset — not veneer, not rainscreen, not panels on rails.
The primary structure is a reinforced concrete frame. The wall is a cavity wall: stone outer leaf, cavity, blockwork inner leaf. The architect is British.
What we need
Essential
- BE / B.Tech Civil Engineering; ME / M.Tech Structures strongly preferred
- 8+ years, with substantial time on site, not only in a design office
- You must be able to read a structural calculation and know whether it is right. This is the core of the job.
- Working knowledge of IS 875 Part 3 and IS 1893, including provisions for non-structural components
- Ability to find the discrepancy between two sets of drawings from two consultants
- Comfortable with survey instruments and setting out
- Willing to say no to a contractor, in writing, and hold the position
- English, and Gujarati or Hindi
What will get you shortlisted
- Experience of heavy stone or masonry — dimension stone, temple, heritage, restoration, or conservation work. Stone that is cut, dressed and set by hand at real thickness.
- Background in the traditional stone ecosystem — BAPS, Sompura tradition, Akshardham-type carved stone programmes, ASI or heritage conservation
- Masonry design experience — Eurocode 6, IS 1905, or equivalent
- Post-installed anchor design and pull-out testing (BS 8539 or Indian practice)
- Exposure to BS 8298 or European stone standards
- Experience working with foreign consultants across time zones
- Classical or traditional architecture and its detailing
We do not expect anyone to have all of this. We expect a structural engineer who has been near heavy stone and wants to go deeper into it.
What this role is not
- You will not produce fixing designs or calculations. That belongs to the consultant, and their PI stands behind it.
- You will not select stone.
- You will not manage the programme. That is the PMC's.
If any of those drift toward you, stop and escalate. The value of this role depends on you remaining independent of the people you check.
