Stone Works Manager — Architectural Dimension Stone (Cladding & Carved Elements)
Owner's Office · Private Neoclassical Residence (VillaRaj) · Ahmedabad
About the project
VillaRaj is a large neoclassical private residence in Ahmedabad, designed by Robert Adam's UK practice with KGA as executive architect. The building carries approximately 12,000 cubic feet of dressed natural stone — domes, cornices, column capitals, decorative railings and balustrades, and ashlar facing — executed in Gwalior Mint sandstone. This is a rare opportunity to run the stone package on a serious work of classical architecture, to international design standards.
The role
Reporting to the Owner's Office and coordinating with the PMC and KGA, you will own the stone trade end-to-end on the owner's behalf: from material sourcing and shop-drawing review through fabrication oversight, site fixing and final quality. You are not the design author and you are not the fixing crew — you are the person who makes sure the right stone, cut and carved correctly, is set on the building correctly and safely.
Key responsibilities
- Manage the dressed-stone and cladding package across both flat ashlar facing and carved/solid elements (cornices, capitals, balustrades, domes).
- Review and validate the trade contractor's setting-out and fixing shop drawings against KGA / Robert Adam details; flag anchoring, support and load-path concerns on projecting and cantilevered elements before work proceeds.
- Oversee fabrication at the workshop (including CNC and hand-finishing) and fixing on site; enforce tolerances, joint lines, profiles and finish quality.
- Coordinate stone sourcing from the Rajasthan sandstone belt and Gwalior Mint supply; manage block selection, colour/vein matching and wastage.
- Liaise with the carving workshops and fixing crews (including the Pindwara–Sirohi / temple-craft ecosystem) and hold them to programme and quality.
- Maintain a stone QC regime: inspection of dressed pieces on receipt, fixing method checks (cramps, dowels, anchors, bedding), and snag/defect close-out.
Required experience
- Substantial site experience on natural/dimension stone — façade, heritage, palace, temple or premium-residential — not limited to flat-panel work.
- Demonstrated competence in dressed-stone fixing: traditional bedded-and-cramped masonry as well as mechanically anchored cladding (cramps, dowels, undercut/SS anchors), and the setting-out it requires.
- Direct experience with carved/solid elements — cornices, capitals, balustrades, domes — at building scale.
- Ability to read and check shop and setting-out drawings (AutoCAD).
- Candidates whose experience is confined to ACP, glass curtain wall, or tile/stone-veneer cladding are not a fit for this role.
Desirable
- Familiarity with the Rajasthan sandstone belt (Pindwara, Sirohi, Bansi Paharpur, Dholpur) and the temple-construction / Sompura workshop network.
- Experience executing details set by international architectural practices.
- Working knowledge of lime and traditional mortars.
