Dear Candidates,
Greetings from SM Talent Solutions!
Tech Design Expert – Controls & Grid Integration (BESS)
Employment Type: Full-time
Location: Pune
Work Model: Hybrid, with availability during prototype commissioning
Experience Required: 5–7 years
Position Level: Senior Individual Contributor – Technical Expert
About the Role
We are hiring a Tech Design Expert – Controls & Grid Integration with strong experience in Energy Management Systems, control-system architecture, SCADA, grid synchronisation and power-system simulation for grid-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems.
The selected candidate will independently design EMS architecture, dispatch and control algorithms, protection schemes, SCADA systems and grid-compliance solutions. This is a hands-on technical expert position and not a people-management role.
The professional will work closely with Power Electronics, Thermal Management and BESS System Design specialists on projects ranging from 50 MWh to multi-GWh capacity.
Key Responsibilities
- Define the complete Energy Management System architecture, including supervisory control, real-time dispatch logic, State-of-Charge balancing and charge/discharge optimisation.
- Prepare EMS specifications, Functional Requirements Documents, control block diagrams and state diagrams.
- Design grid-synchronisation logic using frequency and voltage sensing, Phase-Locked Loop controls and grid-forming or grid-following operating modes.
- Develop control algorithms for frequency regulation, droop control, virtual synchronous machine operation, voltage support and reactive-power injection.
- Design protection schemes covering over-current, over-voltage, under-voltage, anti-islanding and low-voltage ride-through.
- Specify protection-relay settings and SCADA trip logic.
- Define SCADA architecture for data acquisition, real-time monitoring, alarm management, remote dispatch and data logging.
- Work with industrial communication protocols such as Modbus, DNP3 and IEC 61850.
- Conduct MATLAB/Simulink or PSCAD simulations for voltage sags, frequency variations, grid faults and transient conditions.
- Validate EMS and control-system performance against hardware and field-test data.
- Collaborate with Power Electronics experts on inverter-control parameters, including PWM frequency, modulation index and ramp rates.
- Coordinate with Thermal Management experts on thermal derating, shutdown thresholds and emergency-control logic.
- Support load-flow, harmonic and transient-stability studies.
- Conduct Software-in-the-Loop, Hardware-in-the-Loop and field-testing activities.
- Lead control-system commissioning, grid-synchronisation testing, frequency-response validation and fault ride-through confirmation.
- Support cost optimisation through suitable PLC/controller selection, firmware optimisation and simplified protection logic.
Required Qualifications and Experience
- 5–7 years of experience in control systems, electrical engineering or power-systems engineering.
- Minimum 2 years of direct experience designing EMS, SCADA or grid-synchronisation solutions for BESS, renewable-energy or utility-scale systems.
- Experience deploying control solutions to actual production systems—not simulation-only assignments.
- Strong understanding of AC power systems, three-phase circuits, RMS phasors, dq-domain control, short-circuit calculations and fault analysis.
- Strong knowledge of control theory, including PID, state-space and nonlinear controls.
- Hands-on experience designing PLL, DQ-frame, current-controller and voltage-controller algorithms.
- Advanced proficiency in MATLAB/Simulink or PSCAD.
- Experience modelling power systems and validating simulation results against hardware measurements.
- Experience with PLC/RTU programming and IEC 61131-3.
- Practical knowledge of SCADA, industrial control systems and protection-relay coordination.
- Familiarity with cybersecurity requirements for critical infrastructure.
- Knowledge of grid interconnection and compliance standards, including IEEE 1547, FERC 661 and applicable local grid codes.
- Understanding of energy-storage dispatch optimisation, State-of-Charge management, frequency regulation and voltage support.
- Experience with SIL, HIL, field testing and commissioning of control systems.
- Ability to independently own control architecture from technical specification through commissioning.
Preferred Candidate Profile
- Experience working on MW- or GW-scale BESS, renewable-energy or utility projects.
- Hands-on experience in grid-forming and grid-following inverter controls.
- Familiarity with frequency response, reactive-power control, anti-islanding and fault ride-through.
- Experience analysing oscilloscope or grid-analyser data during commissioning.
- Exposure to COTS PLCs, RTUs, numerical relays and industrial communication networks.
- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot control-system failures in real operating environments.
- Experience working with BESS OEMs, power utilities, EPC organisations or system integrators.
