Role Overview
We are looking for a hands-on design engineer to own end-to-end plastic enclosure development for our hardware security products from concept CAD to production-ready mould-qualified parts. You will work closely with our electronics and firmware teams to design enclosures that are manufacturable, aesthetically refined, and field-deployable. The role also covers sample and prototype production using modern printing technologies, and vendor coordination for fabricated fixtures and complementary mechanical parts.
Key Responsibilities
Enclosure Design & Mould Engineering :
- Design plastic enclosures and mechanical assemblies using FreeCAD (parametric solid modelling)
- Develop mould-ready part designs — draft angles, wall thickness, parting lines, gate locations, sink avoidance
- Participate in mould design reviews with tooling vendors and contribute to DFM feedback loops
- Be on the floor during short-run mould trials and first-article inspection
- Troubleshoot mould defects — warpage, flash, short shots, sink marks, weld lines — and propose design or process corrections
- Maintain revision-controlled drawing sets (GD&T basics, tolerances, material callouts)
Sample & Prototype Production :
- Produce functional prototypes using FDM, SLA/MSLA, and SLS 3D printing technologies
- Select appropriate print technology and material based on prototype purpose — fit checks, visual mockups, functional field samples
- Post-process printed parts — sanding, priming, painting, insert fitting — to production-representative finish quality
- Coordinate with local 3D printing service bureaus and manage short-run sample timelines
- Evaluate printed samples against design intent before escalating to injection mould tooling
Fabrication Vendor Coordination :
- Work with sheet metal, CNC machining, and laser cutting vendors to produce fixtures, jigs, and brackets that complement plastic enclosures
- Define fabrication drawings and tolerances for vendor-produced metal parts — mounting plates, DIN rail adapters, wall brackets, internal standoffs
- Source and qualify local Bengaluru-area fabrication vendors for repeatable small-batch production
- Coordinate fit and assembly trials between moulded plastic parts and fabricated metal components
- Manage iterative vendor feedback loops to resolve fit, finish, and assembly issues
Technical Skills & Qualifications
- Proficiency in FreeCAD or equivalent open-source parametric CAD (SolidWorks familiarity a plus)
- Working knowledge of mould design fundamentals — 2-plate/3-plate tooling, ejector systems, cooling
- channels
- Must have been physically present during mould trials and small-quantity production runs
- Practical troubleshooting exposure — able to identify and suggest fixes for common moulding defects
- Hands-on experience with at least one additive manufacturing technology (FDM preferred; SLA/SLS a plus)
- Exposure to fabrication processes — sheet metal bending, CNC turning/milling, laser cutting ,sufficient to write vendor drawings and review outputs
- Basic understanding of common plastics — ABS, PC, PC+ABS, PP — and their processing behavior
Good To Have
- Experience with IP-rated enclosure design — snap fits, gasket grooves, ultrasonic weld joints
- Exposure to cosmetic surface finish specs (texture, gloss, painting/texturing for B/C surfaces)
- Familiarity with hardware products in access control, IoT, or consumer electronics
- Ability to sketch form concepts before jumping to CAD
- Knowledge of metal finishing — powder coating, anodising, zinc plating — for fabricated complementary parts
