1. Field Operations & Agronomy
This is the "boots on the ground" part of the job. You are responsible for the health of the trees and the quality of the bean.
- Crop Management: Overseeing planting, pruning, irrigation, and shade management (critical for Arabica).
- Pest & Disease Control: Monitoring for Coffee Berry Borer or Leaf Rust and implementing integrated pest management.
- Soil Health: Managing fertilization schedules and composting organic waste (pulp) back into the land.
2. Processing & Quality Control
The work doesn't end at the harvest; how you handle the "cherry" determines the final price.
- Harvest Oversight: Managing the picking rounds to ensure only ripe cherries are collected.
- The Wet/Dry Mill: Overseeing pulping, fermentation, washing, and drying (on patios or raised beds).
- Cupping & Grading: Often, managers must be able to "cup" (taste) their own coffee to identify defects before the beans hit the market.
3. Personnel & Administration
Coffee is a labor-intensive industry, often involving hundreds of seasonal workers.
- Labor Relations: Recruitment, training, and ensuring fair wages/housing for pickers.
- Certification Compliance: Maintaining standards for Fair Trade, Rainforest Alliance, or Organic certifications, which require meticulous record-keeping.
- Budgeting: Managing the high upfront costs of the harvest season against the delayed payout from sales.
4. Supply Chain & Sales
- Market Awareness: Keeping an eye on the "C Price" (commodity price) or negotiating directly with specialty roasters for micro-lots.
- Logistics: Organizing transport from the remote estate to the dry mill or the port.
