A Shadow Teacher works closely with a student who requires additional support in an inclusive classroom setting. The role focuses on helping the student achieve academic, social, behavioral, and emotional success while encouraging independence.
Key Roles and Responsibilities1. Academic Support
- Help the student understand classroom instructions and lessons.
- Break down tasks into smaller, manageable steps.
- Assist with note-taking, reading, writing, or completing assignments when needed.
- Reinforce concepts taught by the classroom teacher.
- Support the student in staying focused and organized.
2. Behavioral Support
- Implement behavior-management strategies recommended by specialists or the school.
- Encourage appropriate classroom behavior and self-regulation.
- Monitor triggers that may lead to behavioral challenges.
- Help the student develop coping and problem-solving skills.
3. Social Skills Development
- Encourage interaction with classmates and participation in group activities.
- Help the student develop communication and friendship skills.
- Support inclusion during classroom, playground, and extracurricular activities.
- Foster independence rather than creating dependence.
4. Emotional Support
- Provide reassurance during stressful situations.
- Help the student manage anxiety, frustration, or emotional difficulties.
- Encourage confidence and self-esteem.
5. Communication and Collaboration
- Work closely with classroom teachers, special educators, therapists, and parents.
- Share observations about the student's progress, challenges, and achievements.
- Follow individualized education plans (IEPs) or support plans when applicable.
6. Monitoring and Documentation
- Record observations on academic, behavioral, and social progress.
- Track goals and interventions.
- Report concerns or significant changes to the relevant professionals.
7. Promoting Independence
- Gradually reduce assistance as the student gains skills.
- Teach self-help, organizational, and self-advocacy skills.
- Encourage the student to seek support appropriately from teachers and peers.
