Role Overview
As a Software Development Engineer II (Backend), you'll join the team responsible for building the data and orchestration backbone behind Dentira's Procurement and Lab platforms.
This role is focused on distributed systems, event-driven architectures, and highly scalable backend services. You'll design reliable systems, solve production-scale challenges, optimize performance, and own services from design through production.
This is an ownership-driven engineering role where understanding customer impact, scalability, system reliability, and operational excellence is as important as writing high-quality code.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend services using Node.js, TypeScript, and Go.
- Build and maintain event-driven architectures using Kafka, RabbitMQ, or similar messaging systems.
- Design durable workflow orchestration systems with a strong focus on idempotency, resiliency, and exactly-once processing.
- Develop highly available backend services running on Kubernetes across multiple regions.
- Design efficient MongoDB schemas, indexes, and aggregation pipelines based on production access patterns.
- Investigate production incidents using metrics, logs, traces, and performance profiling to identify root causes.
- Optimize system throughput, reliability, scalability, and fault tolerance.
- Collaborate with Product, Engineering, and cross-functional teams to deliver robust backend solutions.
- Drive automation, improve engineering processes, and contribute to overall platform reliability.
- Leverage AI-powered development tools to improve engineering productivity and software quality.
Qualifications & Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related engineering discipline.
- 3+ years of experience building and operating backend services in production.
- Strong proficiency in Node.js and TypeScript.
- Deep understanding of asynchronous programming, the Node.js event loop, and backend performance optimization.
- Strong expertise in MongoDB, including schema design, indexing strategies, aggregation pipelines, replica sets, and performance tuning.
- Experience building distributed systems using Kafka, RabbitMQ, or other event-driven messaging platforms.
- Good understanding of Redis for caching, rate limiting, and distributed coordination.
- Experience debugging distributed applications using logs, metrics, traces, and monitoring tools.
- Strong knowledge of Data Structures, Algorithms, Concurrency, and System Design.
- Ability to independently solve ambiguous problems and own projects from design through production.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with global teams.
- Strong ownership mindset and ability to drive improvements proactively.
- Comfortable using AI coding assistants, automation tools, and developer productivity workflows.
Preferred Qualifications
- Production experience with Go.
- Experience with Temporal or other workflow orchestration engines.
- Experience with Change Data Capture (CDC) and stream processing.
- Hands-on experience with AWS, Kubernetes, and Terraform.
- Experience with OpenSearch or Elasticsearch.
- Contributions to open-source projects.
What We're Looking For
- An engineer who takes complete ownership of services from design through production.
- Someone who enjoys solving complex distributed systems problems at scale.
- A proactive problem solver who continuously improves systems and engineering processes.
- A strong communicator who collaborates effectively with engineering, product, and global stakeholders.
- Someone who is AI-native and naturally leverages AI tools to improve development speed, automation, and code quality.
- An engineer who thrives in a fast-paced startup environment and enjoys working on high-impact products.
Bonus Points
- Experience working on high-throughput distributed systems.
- Experience handling production incidents and large-scale backend infrastructure.
- Knowledge of event sourcing and streaming architectures.
- Experience building highly available cloud-native applications.
