Consultant Doctor — Hospital Job Description
A Consultant Doctor is responsible for providing specialized medical care, diagnosing and treating patients, conducting consultations, and guiding the clinical management of patients in coordination with other healthcare professionals.
Key Responsibilities
- Examine and assess patients and obtain detailed medical histories.
- Diagnose medical conditions using clinical evaluation and appropriate investigations.
- Develop and implement individualized treatment plans.
- Provide outpatient and inpatient consultations within the area of specialization.
- Prescribe medications, investigations, and other appropriate treatments.
- Monitor patient progress and modify treatment plans when required.
- Perform or supervise relevant medical procedures according to specialization.
- Attend to medical emergencies and provide appropriate clinical management.
- Review laboratory, imaging, and other diagnostic reports.
- Maintain accurate and timely patient medical records.
- Coordinate with nursing staff, medical officers, surgeons, and other specialists.
- Provide guidance to junior doctors and other clinical staff.
- Counsel patients and attendants regarding diagnosis, treatment, risks, and follow-up care.
- Participate in clinical meetings, case discussions, audits, and quality-improvement activities.
- Ensure compliance with hospital policies, medical ethics, and patient-safety standards.
- Maintain patient confidentiality and professional standards of care.
Required Qualifications & Skills
- MBBS with relevant postgraduate qualification such as MD/MS/DNB, depending on specialty.
- Valid medical registration as required by applicable regulations.
- Strong clinical knowledge and diagnostic skills.
- Good communication and patient-counselling skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams.
- Good documentation and decision-making skills.
- Commitment to patient safety and quality healthcare.
