Job Overview
We are looking for an experienced Senior Database Engineer to own and optimize our database ecosystem. The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in MySQL, AWS RDS, database performance tuning, scalability, and cloud-based database management.
In this role, you will work closely with Solution Architects, Product Owners, and Software Development teams to design scalable database solutions, improve application performance, and ensure the reliability of production database environments. This is a customer-facing role that requires excellent technical expertise, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
Key Responsibilities
- Own the performance, health, and scalability of MySQL database environments.
- Optimize SQL queries, indexing strategies, and database schemas for high-performance applications.
- Design and implement scalable and maintainable database solutions.
- Manage AWS RDS (MySQL) instances, including sizing, storage scaling, backups, and high-availability configurations.
- Plan and execute database migrations and version upgrades with minimal downtime.
- Collaborate with Java development teams to optimize database interactions, connection pooling, Hibernate, and JDBC performance.
- Analyze application workloads and identify database-related bottlenecks.
- Troubleshoot production database and cloud infrastructure issues.
- Monitor database performance using AWS CloudWatch and Performance Insights.
- Provide recommendations on database best practices and performance improvements.
- Evaluate and support NoSQL technologies such as AWS DynamoDB where appropriate.
- Mentor team members and contribute to database architecture decisions.
Required Skills
- 5+ years of experience as a Database Engineer or similar role.
- Strong expertise in MySQL administration and production support.
- Deep understanding of InnoDB storage engine, locking mechanisms, transactions, and indexing.
- Strong experience with SQL query optimization and performance tuning.
- Hands-on experience managing AWS RDS (MySQL).
- Experience with AWS CloudWatch and Performance Insights.
- Good knowledge of Java-based applications, including Spring Boot, Hibernate, and JDBC.
- Ability to analyze application logs and identify database performance issues.
- Exposure to NoSQL databases, preferably AWS DynamoDB.
- Excellent analytical, troubleshooting, and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaborate with cross-functional teams.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with Terraform (Infrastructure as Code).
- Scripting experience using Python and/or Bash.
- Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines and automated database deployments.
- Experience working in cloud-native environments.
