Role Overview
We are looking for a Content Writer with expertise in ASL, BSL, and/or other sign languages to create clear, accurate, and contextually appropriate alt text and long descriptions for sign-language-related images and visual content.
The ideal candidate should have a strong understanding of sign language and be able to interpret visual elements such as handshapes, movements, facial expressions, body positioning, signing space, and other relevant features and translate them into meaningful written descriptions.
This role is not a translation or transcription role. The focus is on understanding sign-language visuals and creating accurate descriptions that convey the intended information and meaning.
Key Responsibilities
- Create concise and accurate alt text for images containing ASL, BSL, and other sign-language content.
- Develop detailed long descriptions for complex sign-language images when additional visual information is required.
- Accurately identify and describe relevant sign-language elements, including:
- Handshape
- Hand orientation
- Hand movement and direction
- Location of the sign
- Facial expressions
- Body posture and positioning
- Use of signing space
- Interaction between multiple signers
- Use the surrounding content and context to ensure that descriptions accurately convey the intended meaning.
- Identify important visual information that should be included and avoid adding unnecessary details.
- Ensure descriptions are written in clear, natural, and grammatically correct English.
- Follow established accessibility and alt-text guidelines, including character limits and formatting requirements.
- Maintain consistency in terminology and description style across projects.
Required Qualifications
- Strong knowledge of ASL, BSL, or another recognized sign language.
- Experience as a sign-language professional, interpreter, educator, researcher, content specialist, or subject-matter expert.
- Strong written English and content-writing skills.
- Ability to interpret sign-language visuals and communicate their relevant information accurately in written form.
- Good understanding of the cultural and contextual aspects of sign language.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to identify subtle visual differences that may affect meaning.
- Ability to work with complex visual content and apply contextual judgment.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in any of the following would be an advantage:
- Accessibility or accessible content creation
- Alt-text or image-description writing
- Digital accessibility
- Educational or academic publishing
- AI-generated content review/QC
- Sign-language education or curriculum development
- Working with ASL/BSL learning materials
- Experience reviewing visual content for accessibility
Pay: ₹10,000.00 - ₹20,000.00 per month
