Senior executive registered nurse oversee and coordinate the daily functioning of the Operation Theatre, ensuring high standards of patient care, infection control, and surgical support. The Senior Staff Nurse acts as a team leader, mentor, and clinical expert within the OT setting.
Position Responsibilities: In addition to providing basic nursing care, responsibilities of Senior Executive Registered Nurse include (but are not limited to):
Daily activities:
1. Ensure the OT is prepared and fully equipped for each procedure.
2. Assist surgeons and anaesthetists during surgeries by managing instruments, materials, and patient positioning.
3. Monitor patient’s condition during pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative phases.
4. Adhere strictly to aseptic techniques and infection control protocols.
5. Oversee the proper handling of specimens and documentation.
6. Maintain accurate nursing records and surgical checklists (e.g., WHO Surgical Safety Checklist).
7. Lead and supervise a team of nurses, technicians, and other support staff in the OT.
8. Mentor and train junior nursing staff and new team members.
9. Participate in performance evaluations and continuous nursing education sessions.
10. Coordinate with surgeons, anaesthetists, CSSD, and other departments to ensure smooth workflow.
11. Attend OT meetings and contribute to scheduling surgeries efficiently.
12. Communicate effectively with patients and families (where appropriate) regarding pre/post-op care.
13. Ensure availability and proper maintenance of OT instruments, surgical kits, and emergency drugs.
14. Raise requisitions for required surgical supplies and report equipment malfunctions promptly.
15. Oversee OT linen, consumables, and sterile supplies.
16. Ensure compliance with institutional protocols.
17. Report incidents or near-misses and contribute to root cause analyses.
Weekly activities:
1. Maintains cleanliness of the unit in an orderly manner.
2. Collects store indents in the absence of Lead Nurse Specialist.
3. Initiate scrubbing and fogging of the room in case of notifiable disease.
4. Attend Continued Nursing Education conducted in house and out house as per the job requirement and specifications.
Monthly activities:
1. Checks for near expiry medications and replenish it with new stock.
2. Performs other position-related duties as assigned, depending on assignment setting as described by the reporting authority and line of control in the hospital.
