About the role
We are executing residential buildings in and around Chennai, ranging from G+1 independent houses to Stilt+3 rental blocks. Work is currently live at Chengalpattu and Mannivakkam, with more plots in the pipeline.
We need a site engineer who can take an approved structural drawing and get it built correctly on the ground without constant supervision. You will be the single point of accountability at site for execution, quality and labour output.
Key responsibilities
Execution from drawings
- Read and execute structural drawings issued by our structural consultant, including RCC layouts, column schedules, beam and slab details, and bar bending schedules
- Setting out work: centre line marking, column positions, plinth level, verification against approved drawings before any concrete goes down
- Supervise excavation, PCC, footings, columns, plinth beams, slabs, staircase and lintels through to completion
- Raise queries with the structural consultant early instead of assuming, and record every drawing revision received at site
Quality control
- Check reinforcement before every pour: bar diameter, spacing, lap length, development length, anchorage, cover blocks, chairs and binding
- Supervise concrete pouring, slump test, cube casting, proper vibration and the full curing schedule
- Check shuttering for line, level, verticality and rigidity before pour, and control de-shuttering timing
- Quality checks on AAC blockwork, plastering, waterproofing and finishing stages
Labour management
- Manage civil labour gangs on a daily basis: allocation of work, headcount, attendance and output per head
- Coordinate masons, bar benders, carpenters, plumbers and electricians so that trades do not block each other
- Push daily targets and hold the gang to them, resolve site level disputes, keep the crew productive
- Maintain basic safety discipline at site including PPE, edge protection and scaffolding checks
Materials and reporting
- Raise material indents ahead of requirement so that work never stops for want of cement, TMT, sand, aggregate or blocks
- Verify quantity and quality at the time of delivery, maintain the site stock register and control wastage
- Track actual consumption against the BOQ and flag deviations immediately
- Submit a daily progress report with photographs, and record measurements for contractor RA bills
Must have
- Diploma or BE in Civil Engineering
- 2 to 5 years of hands on site experience on residential buildings, G+1 to Stilt+3
- Able to read structural and architectural drawings independently, without hand holding
- Spoken Hindi is mandatory. A large part of our labour force is from North and East India. You must be able to give instructions, explain drawings and settle issues directly with the workers rather than routing everything through a maistry. This is a hard requirement and will be tested at interview
- Tamil for dealing with local vendors, contractors and site visitors
- Working English for drawings, reports and WhatsApp updates
- Basic AutoCAD and MS Excel
- Own two wheeler with valid licence, and willingness to move between sites
Good to have
- Ability to prepare a bar bending schedule and cross check steel quantities
- Estimation and BOQ experience
- Familiarity with TNCDBR 2019, CMDA and DTCP approval and inspection processes
- Auto level or total station handling
What we are looking for in a person
Someone who checks the reinforcement himself instead of taking the bar bender's word for it. Someone who calls at 7 am when the mixer has not arrived rather than reporting it in the evening. If you are the kind of engineer who signs off on a pour you have not personally inspected, this is not the right place.
Pay: ₹10,000.00 - ₹25,000.00 per month
Work Location: In person
