Position Summary
The Assistant Production Manager supports the Production Manager in planning, coordinating, and supervising day-to-day manufacturing operations. The role is responsible for ensuring efficient execution of heavy fabrication, machining, welding, assembly, and press shop activities while maintaining quality, productivity, safety, and on-time delivery.
Key Responsibilities1. Production Planning & Execution
- Assist in preparing daily, weekly, and monthly production schedules.
- Monitor production progress and ensure adherence to delivery commitments.
- Coordinate with Design, Procurement, Stores, and Quality departments for smooth workflow.
- Support production planning to optimize manpower and machine utilization.
2. Heavy Fabrication Operations
- Supervise fabrication activities including cutting, fit-up, welding, grinding, and assembly.
- Ensure fabrication is carried out according to approved drawings and specifications.
- Monitor productivity and maintain dimensional accuracy.
- Resolve shop floor issues to minimize delays.
3. Machine Shop Management
- Supervise machining operations involving:
- CNC Vertical Machining Centers (VMC)
- CNC Turning Centers
- Conventional Milling Machines
- Centre Lathes
- Radial Drilling Machines
- Surface Grinding Machines
- Ensure proper machine setup, tooling, and preventive maintenance coordination.
- Improve machine utilization and reduce downtime.
4. Welding & Press Shop Operations
- Monitor welding activities and ensure compliance with approved welding procedures.
- Supervise hydraulic and mechanical press operations.
- Ensure proper handling of tools, dies, and heavy components.
- Reduce defects, rework, and material wastage.
5. Team Supervision
- Supervise Production Engineers, Supervisors, Welders, Fitters, Machinists, Operators, and Helpers.
- Allocate manpower based on production priorities.
- Provide on-the-job training and technical guidance.
- Monitor employee attendance, discipline, and productivity.
6. Quality Management
- Ensure products meet customer specifications and quality standards.
- Coordinate with QA/QC for inspections and corrective actions.
- Support implementation of root cause analysis for quality issues.
- Minimize production defects and customer complaints.
7. Safety & Compliance
- Enforce company safety policies and statutory regulations.
- Ensure proper use of PPE and safe work practices.
- Conduct regular safety inspections and toolbox meetings.
- Promote 5S and a safe working environment.
8. Inventory & Cost Control
- Monitor raw material and consumable usage.
- Coordinate with Stores for timely availability of materials.
- Reduce scrap, rework, and production losses.
- Support cost reduction and productivity improvement initiatives.
9. Continuous Improvement
- Participate in Lean Manufacturing, Kaizen, and process improvement projects.
- Improve production efficiency and reduce cycle time.
- Recommend process and equipment improvements.
10. Documentation & Reporting
- Prepare daily production reports and manpower utilization reports.
- Maintain machine utilization and production records.
- Assist in ISO documentation and audit compliance.
- Report production status and issues to the Production Manager.
Educational Qualification
- Diploma / B.E. / B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering, Production Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or equivalent.
Experience
- 5–8 years of experience in a heavy fabrication or heavy engineering manufacturing environment.
- At least 2–3 years in a supervisory or team-leading role.
- Experience in fabrication, welding, machining, and production coordination is preferred.
