Role Summary
The Production Manager will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of the manufacturing process at the Roorkee facility. This includes planning production schedules, managing teams, ensuring quality standards, optimizing costs, and driving continuous improvement across the shop floor. The role demands strong technical knowledge of furniture/upholstery manufacturing combined with excellent people management and operational leadership skills.
Key Responsibilities
Production Planning & Execution
- Plan, schedule, and oversee daily production activities to meet output targets and delivery timelines.
- Translate sales orders and forecasts into executable production plans, ensuring resource utilization.
- Monitor production KPIs (OEE, cycle time, throughput) and drive corrective actions on deviations.
- Coordinate with procurement for the timely availability of raw materials — fabric, foam, frames, and hardware.
Team Leadership & Workforce Management
- Lead, mentor, and manage a team of supervisors, technicians, and shop-floor workers (50+ employees).
- Plan manpower requirements, conduct performance appraisals, and drive skill development programs.
- Maintain discipline, attendance records, and ensure a safe and positive work environment.
- Identify skill gaps and coordinate with HR for training and upskilling of production staff.
Quality Assurance & Compliance
- Implement and maintain quality control processes across all stages of recliner sofa manufacturing.
- Investigate and resolve customer complaints, product defects, and NCRs (Non-Conformance Reports).
- Ensure compliance with ISO standards, safety regulations, and company quality benchmarks.
- Coordinate with the QA/QC team to conduct in-process inspections and final product audits.
Process Improvement & Cost Optimization
- Identify and implement Lean Manufacturing and 5S practices to eliminate waste and improve efficiency.
- Drive cost reduction initiatives in material usage, labour productivity, and energy consumption.
- Analyse production data, prepare reports, and present improvement proposals to senior management.
- Lead kaizen/continuous improvement projects and ensure shop-floor standardization.
Maintenance & Equipment Management
- Oversee preventive and breakdown maintenance of all machinery – cutting machines, sewing units, stapling/assembly equipment.
- Coordinate with the maintenance team to minimize downtime and ensure 95%+ machine uptime.
- Recommend capital expenditure for new equipment or technology upgrades as required.
Inventory & Supply Chain Coordination
- Monitor raw material inventory, WIP, and finished goods to prevent stock-outs and overstock.
- Liaise with stores, logistics, and vendors to ensure smooth inward and outward material flow.
- Ensure accurate production reporting and update ERP/MIS systems in a timely manner.
Sales & Service Coordination
- Coordinate with Sales and Service Teams for order planning, status updates, and delivery timelines.
- Respond to sales team concerns related to customer orders and production status.
- Ensure smooth interdepartmental communication for timely execution and customer satisfaction.
Required Qualifications & Experience
Education
- B.Tech / Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related discipline.
- MBA / PG Diploma in Operations Management is an added advantage.
Experience
- Minimum 5 years of experience in a production/manufacturing management role.
- Prior experience in furniture manufacturing, upholstery, or allied industries is strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated experience managing large shop-floor teams of 40+ workers.
- Hands-on exposure to recliner mechanisms, upholstery processes, or wooden frame assembly is a plus.
Technical Skills
- Strong knowledge of Lean Manufacturing, 5S, Kaizen, TPM, and Six Sigma methodologies.
- Proficiency in ERP systems (SAP, Tally, or similar) for production planning and reporting.
- Familiarity with fabric cutting, foam processing, frame assembly, and recliner mechanism fitting.
- Working knowledge of quality tools: FMEA, SPC, fishbone diagrams, control charts.
