Position Summary
As a Software Engineer III at Deloitte Consulting, you will design, develop, and modernize enterprise-scale mainframe solutions that support complex business and technology priorities. In this role, you will work across the full delivery lifecycle, translating requirements into technical solutions, guiding development activities, and driving quality across design, build, testing, and deployment. You will also collaborate with cross-functional and global teams to deliver scalable outcomes, support modernization initiatives, and mentor junior practitioners.

Work you'll do
As a Software Engineer III on the Engineering as a Service team, you will be responsible for:

Lead technical discussions with business, functional, and engineering teams to define requirements, assess architecture impacts, and resolve design questions.

Design, develop, enhance, and migrate mainframe applications using COBOL, JCL, DB2, VSAM, CICS, IMS DB, and related technologies.

Establish technical standards, conduct code reviews, and support quality assurance processes across development and deployment activities.

Manage delivery execution across sprint planning, estimation, status tracking, release support, and post-implementation stabilization.

Develop templates, scripts, or automation solutions that improve development efficiency and operational consistency.

Required:

Data Extraction:
-
Extract, transform and translate data from mainframe systems
-
Rules Discovery:
-
Collaborate with the SMEs and Onshore teams to understand the business requirements for the mining activities

Split the entire code into small logical snippets which are consumed as rules.

Validate the rules and patterns against the actual data source.

Data Analysis:
-
Conduct in-depth analysis of the extracted rules, dependencies and prompts to identify anomalies and areas of enhancement for future state.

Analyze the Cobol-DB2 & CICS programs, jobs, procs and control cards for detailed interpretation

Collaboration:
-
Collaborate with Business analysts and Business stakeholders to integrate the discovered rules into the user stories.

Collaborate with scrum teams BAs to verify the user stories by doing code-level deep dive and support testing teams in providing resolution based on defects/gaps in current state.

Documentation:

Maintain detailed documentation of rules, translations, logical process flows, technical diagrams, call chains, dependency analysis, Visio process flows including sequencing, module flows and job flows.

Create reports and publish activity trackers of daily progress to the required stakeholders.

Problem Resolution:

Identify code redundancy, system design flaws and potential enhancement areas of the mainframe systems

Prepare detailed documentation on the issue identification, RCA, steps to mitigate the issue in future, etc.
Qualifications
-
Bachelor's degree in a related field (e.g., computer science, information technology).

Previous experience in Mainframe Development, Rules Mining or similar role
-
Proficiency in mainframe programming languages such as COBOL, JCL, Assembler
-
Good understanding of mainframe databased and file systems (e.g., DB2, VSAM)

Knowledge on tools like Endevor, Zeke, Scheduler, IBM Rational and others relevant in mainframe industries

Knowledge of mainframe application development frameworks and methodologies

Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
