Position: Quality Control (QC) Engineer – Fabrication (Shipyard Projects)

Reporting To: QA/QC Manager / Project Manager
Location: Fabrication Yard / Shipyard Project Site
Purpose of the Role
The QC Engineer is responsible for ensuring that all shipyard-related precision fabrication works are executed in compliance with approved drawings, technical specifications, applicable marine standards, and quality requirements. The role includes coordination with DNV as the third-party inspection body, internal quality checks, and documentation control to ensure defect-free delivery.
Key Responsibilities
1. Quality Planning & Compliance
- Ensure fabrication activities comply with approved IFC drawings, WPS/WPQR, ITPs, QAP, and project specifications.
- Implement and monitor quality procedures as per DNV rules, ISO standards, and client requirements.
- Review project quality documents and ensure compliance at all stages of fabrication.
2. Inspection & Testing
- Conduct incoming material inspection for plates, pipes, profiles, consumables, and fittings as per MTCs and specifications.
- Perform in-process inspections for cutting, fit-up, welding, dimensional accuracy, and assembly.
- Verify welding parameters and ensure welding is carried out by qualified welders.
- Coordinate and witness NDT activities (RT, UT, MT, PT) as per approved ITPs.
- Carry out final inspection prior to third-party and client inspection.
3. Third-Party Inspection Coordination (DNV)
- Coordinate inspections with DNV surveyors and ensure readiness for stage-wise inspection.
- Ensure availability of drawings, procedures, calibration certificates, and inspection records during DNV visits.
- Address DNV comments, NCRs, and observations promptly and ensure proper closure.
- Maintain inspection release notes and approvals issued by DNV.
4. Dimensional & Precision Control
- Verify dimensional tolerances as per shipbuilding and marine fabrication standards.
- Ensure precision alignment, flatness, straightness, and weld profiles meet specified requirements.
- Monitor distortion control methods and corrective actions during fabrication.
5. Non-Conformance & Corrective Action
- Identify, report, and document Non-Conformities (NCRs).
- Coordinate root cause analysis and implementation of corrective and preventive actions.
- Ensure rework and repairs are carried out as per approved procedures and reinspected.
6. Documentation & Records
- Maintain quality records including inspection reports, NDT reports, weld maps, traceability records, and DNV approvals.
- Prepare and compile final quality dossiers for submission to clients and classification societies.
- Ensure proper document control and traceability of materials and fabrication stages.
7. Safety & Work Discipline
- Ensure inspections are carried out in compliance with yard safety rules and permit systems.
- Promote quality awareness among fabrication and welding teams.
Qualifications & Experience
- Education:
- Diploma / B.E. / B.Tech in Mechanical / Production / Marine Engineering or equivalent.
- Experience:
- Minimum 3–7 years of experience in shipyard or marine fabrication projects.
- Hands-on experience in precision fabrication, welding inspection, and third-party coordination.
- Prior exposure to DNV, ABS, LR, BV, or IRS inspections is highly preferred.
Technical Skills & Knowledge
- Strong knowledge of:
- Shipyard fabrication processes and tolerances
- Welding procedures (WPS, PQR, WPQR)
- NDT methods and interpretation
- Marine and structural drawings
- ISO 9001 Quality Management Systems
- Familiarity with DNV Rules & Standards
- Ability to read and interpret complex fabrication drawings
- Good documentation and reporting skills
