Full job description

The Electrical CAD Designer is responsible for creating, modifying, and managing detailed electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, layout drawings, and technical documentation using specialized computer-aided design software. Working closely with electrical engineers, project managers, and manufacturing teams, this role ensures that electrical systems—ranging from control panels to building power distribution—are accurately designed, safe, and fully compliant with industry standards.

Key Responsibilities

Schematic & Diagram Creation: Develop precise electrical schematics, single-line diagrams (SLDs), wiring diagrams, and panel layout drawings based on engineering calculations and rough sketches.
Component Selection & BOMs: Generate and maintain accurate Bills of Materials (BOMs), specifying components such as circuit breakers, relays, PLCs, transformers, and wire gauges.
Collaboration & Revisions: Work dynamically with engineering teams to incorporate design changes, perform redline updates, and resolve design discrepancies before final manufacturing or construction.
Standards & Compliance: Ensure all electrical designs adhere to relevant national and international codes (e.g., NEC, NFPA 70/79, IEC, IEEE, or UL 508A).
System Routing & Interconnection: Plan the physical routing of conduits, cable trays, and wire runs in 2D or 3D environments to optimize space and ensure safety compliance.

Required Skills & Qualifications

Software Proficiency: Advanced skills in specialized electrical design software such as AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN Electric P8, SolidWorks Electrical, or Altium Designer (depending on whether the focus is industrial automation, construction, or PCB design).
Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of basic electrical engineering concepts, circuit theory, control logic, and industrial component functionality.
Blueprint Reading: Superior ability to read, interpret, and analyze complex engineering drawings, architectural blueprints, and manufacturer datasheets.
Attention to Detail: High precision in calculating voltage drops, wire sizing, conduit fills, and managing complex terminal numbering systems.
Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills for cross-functional collaboration with shop floor technicians, clients, and engineers.

Education & Experience

Education: Associate degree or technical diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology, Electrical Drafting, CAD Technology, or a related field.
Experience: 2–5 years of experience in electrical drafting or design is typically preferred. Familiarity with programmable logic controllers (PLCs) or control panel assembly is a major plus.
