THE ROLE
Lawyered Wills and Real Estate Legal is being built to make succession planning, property transactions, and estate management genuinely accessible to Indian consumers and businesses. The person in this role is not a background function. You are the legal spine of the product.
We are looking for a practicing lawyer or legal professional with deep expertise in real estate laws, transfer of property, wills, trusts, and succession planning in India. You will work directly on live client cases, guide product teams on how legal requirements should shape product features, review and draft legal documents, and represent Lawyered's legal quality standard to every customer who interacts with this product.
Experience working within an organisation, a legal-tech platform, a financial institution, or a structured legal practice rather than only in independent advocacy is strongly preferred. You understand what it means to deliver legal services at scale, with consistency, accountability, and a customer-first mindset.
This role is for someone who has moved beyond courtroom-only practice and wants to build something larger. You will shape how lakhs of Indians plan their estates, protect their property, and navigate the legal side of the biggest financial decisions of their lives.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Wills, Succession and Estate Planning
Lead and manage end-to-end will consultation for individual and HUF clients, covering asset mapping, beneficiary structuring, executor appointment, and testamentary intent documentation.
Draft, review, and finalise wills that are legally sound, clearly worded, and enforceable under the Indian Succession Act, 1925, and applicable personal law provisions.
Guide clients through the will registration process under the Registration Act, 1908, including documentation requirements, sub-registrar procedures, and post-registration record management.
Advise on trust structures including private family trusts, charitable trusts, and living trusts, with guidance on trust deed drafting, trustee responsibilities, and applicable tax implications.
Handle succession-related queries including intestate succession, nominations versus inheritance, probate proceedings, letters of administration, and mutation of assets post death.
Transfer of Property and Real Estate Transactions
Advise clients on the legal framework governing transfer of property under the Transfer of Property Act, 1882, and state-specific stamp duty and registration laws.
Manage legal due diligence for property transactions including title verification, encumbrance search, chain of title analysis, and identification of legal risks before purchase or transfer.
Draft and review sale deeds, gift deeds, mortgage deeds, lease agreements, leave and licence agreements, development agreements, and power of attorney documents.
Advise on gift transactions including taxability under the Income Tax Act, stamp duty implications, and documentation requirements for gifts to relatives and non-relatives.
Guide clients on property held in joint names, co-ownership disputes, partition deeds, relinquishment deeds, and family settlement agreements.
Legal and Financial Implications Advisory
Advise clients on the tax and financial implications of property transfers including capital gains tax on sale, stamp duty optimisation, registration charges, and TDS on immovable property transactions.
Explain the legal consequences of different transfer modes, comparing sale, gift, will, and trust structures, so clients can make informed decisions aligned with their estate planning and tax goals.
Liaise with financial advisors, chartered accountants, and other professionals as needed to give clients a complete picture of the legal and financial dimensions of their decisions.
Stay current on changes in stamp duty rates, GST applicability on real estate, RERA requirements, and succession law developments across key Indian states.
Product and Tech Collaboration
Work closely with the product and technology teams to translate legal requirements, document workflows, and client advisory journeys into product features that are accurate, compliant, and user-friendly.
Review all legal content, templates, chatflows, and automated document drafts used within the Lawyered Wills and Real Estate Legal product before they go live.
Flag legal risks, ambiguities, or compliance gaps in product flows and suggest corrective language or workflow changes.
Contribute to building the internal legal knowledge base and training materials that will enable Lawyered's wider lawyer network to handle wills and real estate cases consistently.
Client Communication and Advisory
Handle client consultations across video, phone, and chat, communicating complex legal concepts in plain language that clients across literacy levels and backgrounds can understand and act on.
Manage client feedback, escalations, and concerns with professionalism and a resolution-first mindset, ensuring every client interaction reflects Lawyered's commitment to accessible legal help.
Conduct consultations in English fluently and communicate effectively in Hindi and at least one regional language, ensuring clients from diverse backgrounds feel heard and supported.
Maintain documentation of client interactions, case progress, and legal advice delivered, ensuring records are accurate and audit-ready.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION
BBA LLB or LLB from a recognised law school is the minimum qualification required.
LLM with a specialisation in property law, succession law, corporate law, or taxation is strongly preferred and will be treated as a significant advantage.
Enrolment with a State Bar Council is required.
EXPERIENCE
Minimum 5 years of active legal practice or legal operations experience with a demonstrable focus on real estate, property transactions, wills, succession, and estate planning.
Experience working within an organisation is strongly preferred. This includes in-house legal roles at banks, NBFCs, real estate developers, legal-tech platforms, insurance companies, or structured legal services firms, rather than only independent litigation practice.
Hands-on experience drafting and registering wills and handling matters under the Indian Succession Act is essential.
Exposure to multi-state property transactions, NRI property matters, or RERA-related advisory is a meaningful advantage.
Prior experience in a client-facing advisory role where explaining legal concepts to non-lawyers was a core part of the job is essential.
SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES
Legal Knowledge
Deep working knowledge of the Transfer of Property Act, 1882, Indian Succession Act, 1925, Registration Act, 1908, Stamp Act, Hindu Succession Act, Muslim Personal Law, and relevant state-level property laws.
Understanding of income tax implications of property transactions including capital gains, gift tax provisions, and TDS on immovable property under Section 194-IA.
Familiarity with RERA regulations and their practical implications for buyers and sellers.
Document Drafting
Strong drafting skills for wills, trust deeds, sale deeds, gift deeds, relinquishment deeds, power of attorney, and other property and succession instruments.
Ability to draft documents that are not only legally sound but written clearly enough for clients to understand the commitments they are making.
Client Communication
Fluent in English, both written and spoken, with the ability to prepare formal legal correspondence, reports, and client advisories.
Ability to communicate effectively in Hindi and at least one regional language such as Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Bengali, or Kannada.
Comfortable managing client communication across multiple channels including video calls, phone, email, and in-app chat within a technology platform.
Attitude and Work Style
Client-first mindset with the ability to handle sensitive matters such as succession planning and estate disputes with empathy, patience, and discretion.
Structured and organised with strong documentation habits and the ability to manage multiple client files simultaneously without letting quality slip.
Comfortable working in a technology-driven environment and willing to learn new tools, adapt to platform workflows, and contribute to product improvement discussions.
Collaborative and communicative with non-legal teams including product managers, engineers, customer success, and operations.
WHY LAWYERED
You will be building the legal quality standard for a product that will reach lakhs of Indians who have never had access to proper estate planning or property legal help.
This is a role where your legal expertise directly shapes both the product and the customer experience, not just one or the other.
Backed by Rainmatter, Turbostart, India Accelerator, MEITY, and TiE Angels, Lawyered has the resources and the mandate to scale this product aggressively across the country.
You will work at the intersection of law, technology, and real consumer impact, which is where the most interesting legal-tech work in India is happening right now.
