The Role
Responsible for virtually all technical work with respect to projects and service provided to customers. As an MES and Controls Engineer, you will report to the Director of Operations, Information Solutions, applying creativity and technical knowledge to develop, design, and implement control and information systems solutions. The role involves direct interaction with customers, providing tier-1 service, support, and expertise in project management and business development.
Key Responsibilities
Work on various stages of information and control projects including PLC programming, HMI design, SCADA system design, electrical design and code development for data management systems
- Testing, troubleshooting, debugging and commissioning complex systems
- Leveraging industry best practices and tools to deliver solutions across multiple industries (i.e., food, beverage, CPG, automotive, pharmaceutical, etc.)
- Working with a team of highly functioning professionals who have a passion for integrating world-class solutions for Fortune 500 customers
- Use approved AI-assisted development tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Claude) to support code generation, troubleshooting, and documentation, while maintaining full ownership of output quality
- Apply sound engineering judgement to validate, test, refactor, or reject AI-generated content before deployment
- Contribute to the integration of basic AI-driven capabilities within MES, SCADA, or data solutions where appropriate (e.g., data insights, automation enhancements)
Qualifications and Experience
Essential
- Experience in the manufacturing software arena, particularly using software that can be described as Information/MES/IIoT
- Experience working in an industrial manufacturing environment and with industrial controls
- Proven expertise in areas such as requirements specification, architecting solutions, systems analysis, and design.
- Certified with Inductive Automation’s Ignition Platform software; experience with Sepasoft and/or Cirrus Link Solutions integrated modules an asset.
- Demonstrable understanding of industrial automation PLC platforms, network design and implementation, OT/IT configurations, production and engineering processes.
- Advanced experience using industrial software packages provided by any or all the following vendors: Rockwell, Siemens, Aveva/Wonderware and GE.
- Experience with network architecture design, system virtualization, and associated design tools
- Experience using software and systems like MQTT, Azure DevOps, AWS, Node-Red, and Docker an asset.
- Development experience using Python, Java, JavaScript, and/or Microsoft .NET
- Experience with database software such as Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL, Oracle, and/or InfluxDB
- Familiar with application development methodologies, techniques and standards, configuration management, middleware, networking and communication, and hardware configuration
- Practical experience using AI-assisted development tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Claude) in day-to-day engineering workflows
- Foundational understanding of generative AI and LLM concepts, including Prompting basics, Context handling, Hallucination risk, Data privacy considerations
- Ability to apply AI tools responsibly within engineering workflows, ensuring accuracy, security, and maintainability
Desirable
- Project management experience is an asset.
- Exposure to implementing AI-enabled features or integrations within industrial or data-driven systems
- Experience with:
- LLM APIs
- Prompt design
- Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) or similar approaches in practical use cases
