Role Overview
We are looking for a Senior Full Stack Engineer with strong backend expertise in NestJS and TypeScript to build and operate services supporting both reader-facing and newsroom-facing products.
This is a backend-weighted full stack role focused on production-grade APIs, MongoDB and relational databases, AWS infrastructure, authentication and authorization, caching, personalization, observability, and high-traffic reliability.
You will be expected to take ownership beyond development — including production operations, on-call responsibilities, incident response, and solving the underlying causes of recurring problems.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and build scalable NestJS services using TypeScript for reader-facing and newsroom-facing traffic.
- Build APIs consumed by mobile and web engineering teams while maintaining a strong developer experience.
- Design systems that remain reliable during sudden traffic spikes and breaking-news events.
- Implement and optimize:
- Caching
- Autoscaling
- Backpressure
- Load shedding
- Graceful degradation
- Design and maintain data models across MongoDB and relational databases.
- Own database indexes, query plans, aggregation pipelines, and performance optimization.
- Build and secure authentication and authorization capabilities, including:
- Login and sessions
- SSO
- Entitlements
- Roles and permissions
- Implement personalization systems covering signals, ranking, and experimentation.
- Own the caching architecture end to end, including Redis and CloudFront.
- Implement purge-on-publish workflows when content is corrected, updated, or removed.
- Deploy and operate backend services on AWS, including ECS, EC2, S3, and CloudFront.
- Build production-grade observability with tracing, metrics, SLOs, dashboards, and actionable alerts.
- Participate in on-call rotations and production incident response.
- Conduct incident reviews and implement long-term fixes that address root causes rather than individual symptoms.
Required Skills & Experience
- 5–8 years of backend engineering experience.
- At least 2–3 years of hands-on NestJS experience in production.
- Strong TypeScript expertise, including:
- Typed services
- Dependency injection
- Decorators
- Maintainable service architecture
- Strong production experience with MongoDB, including:
- Aggregation pipelines
- Indexing strategies
- Explain plans
- Replica sets and/or sharding
- Strong experience with PostgreSQL or MySQL, including:
- Transactions
- Query optimization
- Query plans
- Database migrations
- Demonstrated experience handling real-world traffic spikes and production scalability challenges.
- Hands-on AWS experience with ECS, EC2, S3, and CloudFront.
- Strong authentication and authorization experience, including:
- OAuth 2.0
- OIDC
- JWT
- Role-Based Access Control (RBAC)
- At least one SSO integration
- Experience with Redis and distributed caching strategies.
- Strong understanding of observability, including tracing, metrics, SLOs, and alerting.
- Experience participating in production on-call and incident management.
- Ability to join within 0–15 days.
This Role May Not Be a Fit If
- You have not spent at least 2–3 years working with NestJS in production.
- Your TypeScript experience is limited to adding annotations to JavaScript rather than building properly typed services.
- Your MongoDB experience does not include aggregations, indexing, explain plans, or replica/shard operations.
- You do not have strong PostgreSQL or MySQL experience involving transactions, query plans, and migrations.
- You cannot describe a specific high-traffic incident or traffic spike, including what happened and how you resolved it.
- You have not operated backend services on AWS using services such as ECS, EC2, S3, or CloudFront.
- You have not implemented OAuth 2.0/OIDC, JWT, RBAC, and SSO integrations.
- You have never participated in production on-call or written an incident review.
- Your notice period is longer than 15 days.
