ABOUT THE NEW SCHOOL MADURAI
The New School Madurai is a Waldorf-inspired learning community rooted in the belief that education must nourish the whole child — body, mind, and spirit. Our primary school follows the ICSE curriculum, delivered through a pedagogical lens that values imagination, rhythm, beauty, and deep human connection. Every subject at our school is taught as a living, meaningful experience, not merely an academic exercise.
German has a natural home in a Waldorf-inspired school. At The New School Madurai, we offer German not as an optional extra but as an integral part of our children's education — introduced early, taught joyfully, and woven into the rhythm of school life.
POSITION OVERVIEW
We are looking for a German Language Teacher to join our team on a part-time basis. We are equally open to full-time candidates who may take on additional responsibilities within the school. You will teach German across our pre-primary and primary classes, using age-appropriate, experiential methods — songs, movement, storytelling, and conversation — that reflect both Waldorf pedagogy and sound language acquisition practice.
This is a role for someone who carries German with joy and communicates that joy to young children. Prior experience in Waldorf or early childhood language teaching is an advantage, but what matters most is your relationship with the language and your ability to make it come alive in a classroom.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
TEACHING & CURRICULUM
● Plan and deliver engaging German language lessons across pre-primary and primary classes
● Use Waldorf-aligned methods — oral language, rhyme, song, movement, and storytelling — especially in early years, where the spoken word precedes the written
● Introduce German vocabulary, simple phrases, and conversational patterns through play and rhythm rather than rote instruction
● Develop lesson plans and materials suited to different age groups and language levels
● Maintain student progress records and contribute to term reports
● For full-time candidates: take on additional subject or support responsibilities in discussion with the school
STUDENT SUPPORT & RELATIONSHIPS
● Build a warm, confident classroom environment where children feel safe to speak, stumble, and try again
● Differentiate teaching to meet different learning paces and language exposure levels
● Communicate student progress to class teachers and parents in a clear, encouraging manner
COMMUNITY & COLLABORATION
● Collaborate with class teachers to integrate German language moments into broader classroom life where possible
● Contribute to school cultural events, seasonal festivals, and community gatherings
● Participate in staff meetings and professional development sessions as applicable to part-time schedule
● Help create a school environment where German is visible, heard, and celebrated
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
Essential
● High proficiency in German — spoken and written; native or near-native fluency strongly preferred
● A genuine love for the German language and enthusiasm for sharing it with young children
● Ability to teach in an experiential, child-centred way — through song, story, games, and conversation
● Comfortable working with young children across a range of ages
● Ability to communicate in English with colleagues and parents
Desirable
● Formal qualification in German language teaching, linguistics, or a related field (e.g. Goethe-Institut certification, B.Ed. with German, MA in German)
● Experience teaching German in a Waldorf, Montessori, or other progressive school setting
● Familiarity with early childhood language acquisition approaches
● Knowledge of Waldorf pedagogy and its approach to foreign language teaching
● Experience living, studying, or working in a German-speaking country
WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR
We are open to candidates from a range of backgrounds — trained language teachers, native speakers with a passion for teaching, Waldorf-trained educators, or individuals with relevant experience who have not followed a conventional teaching path. What we are looking for is:
● Someone who speaks German with confidence and warmth
● A natural communicator with young children — patient, playful, and present
● A person who believes language is best learned through joy, not pressure
● Someone who can work collaboratively within a close-knit school community
● A reflective practitioner who is open to feedback and ongoing growth
● Flexibility to work part-time — or interest in a full-time role with broader school responsibilities
WHAT WE OFFER
● A meaningful teaching role in a school that takes language seriously as a human capacity, not just a subject
● A warm, collaborative staff community with genuine mutual respect
● Compensation commensurate with qualifications, experience, and hours
● Flexibility in scheduling for part-time engagement
● For full-time candidates: a comprehensive role with opportunities for growth and contribution across the school
● Exposure to Waldorf pedagogy and a school culture rooted in creativity and care
