Role Overview
The Nutanix Level 1 Support Engineer serves as the primary point of contact for infrastructure monitoring, operations, and first-level troubleshooting of the Nutanix Hyperconverged Infrastructure (HCI) environment. This role involves proactive system monitoring, incident response, virtual machine management, and escalation of complex issues to L2/L3 support teams. The ideal candidate will possess foundational knowledge of virtualization technologies and demonstrate strong problem-solving capabilities in enterprise IT environments.
Key Responsibilities
1. Monitoring and Operations
- Monitor Nutanix clusters continuously using Prism Element and Prism Central dashboards
- Track and assess critical infrastructure metrics including:
– Cluster health status and performance indicators
– Node operational status and resource utilization
– Disk health, storage capacity, and replication status
– System alerts, warnings, and critical events
- Execute daily health checks and distribute status reports to stakeholders
- Maintain awareness of system thresholds and capacity planning requirements
2. Incident Management (Level 1)
- Respond promptly to infrastructure alerts and user-reported issues
- Perform initial troubleshooting for common scenarios:
– Virtual machine performance degradation or downtime
– Node-level alerts and hardware warnings
– Storage capacity warnings and space optimization
- Create, update, and close incident tickets following ITIL framework standards
- Document troubleshooting steps, observations, and resolution actions
- Escalate unresolved or complex issues to L2/L3 teams with comprehensive logs and detailed observations
3. Virtual Machine Management
- Provision, modify, and decommission virtual machines according to approved requests
- Perform routine VM operations including start, stop, reboot, and snapshot management
- Allocate and adjust compute resources (CPU, RAM) and storage to virtual machines
- Manage virtual disk operations: attach/detach disks and mount ISO images
- Collaborate with application teams to fulfill VM-related service requests
- Ensure proper VM configuration adheres to organizational standards
4. Backup and Disaster Recovery Support
- Monitor virtual machine backup operations using Nutanix Leap and third-party solutions (Commvault, Veeam, etc.)
- Verify backup job completion status and investigate failures
- Execute basic VM restoration procedures (file-level or full VM recovery) under supervision
- Monitor replication health and status between primary datacenter and disaster recovery sites
- Maintain backup compliance and retention policy adherence
5. Patch and Maintenance Support
- Assist infrastructure teams during scheduled maintenance activities:
– Nutanix AOS (Acropolis Operating System) upgrades
– AHV hypervisor version updates
– Firmware and BIOS upgrade procedures
- Conduct pre-upgrade health checks and readiness assessments
- Perform post-upgrade validation and health verification
- Document maintenance activities and any anomalies encountered
6. User and Access Management
- Administer user accounts and access permissions within Prism management interface
- Implement Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) policies as directed
- Follow security best practices and compliance guidelines
- Support audit requirements through proper access documentation
7. Documentation and Reporting
- Maintain comprehensive operational documentation:
– Daily operational checklists and shift handover notes
– Incident reports with root cause analysis
– Change activity logs and implementation records
- Update Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and runbook documentation
- Generate and distribute daily/weekly operational status reports
- Contribute to knowledge base articles for recurring issues
Required Technical Skills
Nutanix and Virtualization
- Foundational knowledge of Nutanix Acropolis Operating System (AOS)
- Familiarity with Prism Element and Prism Central management interfaces
- Experience with AHV (Acropolis Hypervisor) preferred, or VMware ESXi
- Understanding of hyperconverged infrastructure concepts:
– Compute resource pooling
– Distributed storage architecture
– Virtualization layer fundamentals
Operating Systems
- Basic system administration capabilities in:
– Linux distributions (RHEL, Ubuntu)
– Windows Server environments
- VM-level troubleshooting skills for resource contention issues (CPU, memory, disk I/O)
- Understanding of operating system performance metrics and diagnostics
Networking Fundamentals
- Working knowledge of core networking concepts:
– IP addressing and subnetting
– VLAN configuration and management
– NIC bonding and redundancy
- Basic network troubleshooting using standard tools (ping, traceroute, nslookup)
- Understanding of network connectivity requirements for virtualized environments
Essential Soft Skills
- Strong written and verbal communication abilities for technical and non-technical audiences
- Capacity to follow documented procedures, SOPs, and escalation matrices
- Customer service orientation with professional demeanor
- Ability to work effectively under pressure during critical incidents
- Flexibility to support 24x7 shift operations (including nights, weekends, and holidays) as required
- Team collaboration skills and willingness to share knowledge
Education and Experience
Education Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Technology, or related field (B.E., B.Tech, BCA, MCA)
Experience Requirements:
2 years of hands-on experience in virtualization or infrastructure support roles
Exposure to enterprise IT environments preferred
Certifications

- Nutanix Certified Associate (NCA) or Nutanix Certified Professional (NCP)
- VMware Certified Technical Associate (VCTA) or VMware Certified Professional (VCP) - Optional

Work Environment
- Position may require rotating shift schedules to provide 24x7 infrastructure support coverage
