The Opportunity:
We are seeking a Lead Linux Administrator to lead engineering and operations for our Linux server estate across on-premises data centres and Microsoft Azure. You will architect hybrid infrastructure, implement SRE practices, own core platform services (identity, storage, HPC), and mentor the infrastructure team.
You bring strong Linux fundamentals, Azure architecture experience, an automation-first mindset, and a proven ability to develop others.
Key Responsibilities
Architecture & Engineering
- Design, deploy, and operate Linux infrastructure across on-prem and Azure.
- Architect Azure for Linux/Windows workloads, networking, and hybrid identity integration.
- Own identity services: Red Hat IdM/LDAP, SSSD, Kerberos, and AD/Entra ID integration.
Site Reliability & Operations
- Implement SRE practices: define SLOs/SLIs, improve observability, and run incident management with blameless post-mortems.
- Automate provisioning and operations using scripting and IaC; reduce toil through standardisation.
- Lead patching, vulnerability remediation, and compliance reporting.
Technical Leadership & Mentorship
- Lead technical design and code reviews; mentor engineers and administrators.
- Define standards, reference architectures, and runbooks.
- Coach team members on Linux internals, Azure patterns, automation, and SRE discipline.
- Partner with Security, Networking, Storage, Applications, and DevOps to deliver secure, scalable platform services.
Required Qualifications
- 10+ years in Linux systems administration/engineering, including 3+ years in a senior/lead role.
- Degree in Computer Science/Engineering (or equivalent practical experience).
- Expert Linux (RHEL/CentOS/Rocky and/or Ubuntu): kernel and performance tuning, systemd, networking, storage, troubleshooting.
- Azure IaaS & hybrid: VMs, VNets/NSGs, Storage (Azure Files/NetApp Files), Entra ID, hybrid identity, Azure Arc.
- Enterprise identity & storage: LDAP/Red Hat IdM, SSSD, Kerberos, AD/Entra integration; NFSv3/v4, automounter, enterprise NAS.
- Automation: Python/Bash, Ansible.
- Observability: Prometheus, Grafana, Azure Monitor.
- SRE experience: incident response, capacity planning, post-mortems.
- Strong communication and stakeholder management; able to explain trade-offs and mentor effectively.
Preferred Qualifications
- Microsoft certifications: AZ-104, AZ-305, or AZ-700.
- Red Hat certifications: RHCE, RHCA, or equivalent.
- Experience with Azure DevOps CI/CD pipelines.
