The Sonography Technician is responsible for operating ultrasound equipment to perform diagnostic imaging procedures as prescribed by physicians. The technician ensures accurate image acquisition, prepares preliminary reports in the prescribed hospital format, maintains patient records, and ensures proper functioning and maintenance of the sonography machine. The role requires strict adherence to patient safety, quality standards, and regulatory guidelines.
Key ResponsibilitiesClinical Responsibilities
- Perform diagnostic ultrasound examinations as prescribed by consultants and physicians.
- Prepare patients for sonography procedures by explaining the process and ensuring their comfort.
- Position patients correctly to obtain optimal diagnostic images.
- Capture clear and accurate images for interpretation by the Radiologist.
- Assist Radiologists during specialized ultrasound procedures when required.
- Ensure patient privacy, dignity, and confidentiality at all times.
Reporting Responsibilities
- Prepare sonography reports in the hospital-approved format with complete patient details.
- Ensure accuracy and completeness of findings before forwarding reports to the Radiologist for verification.
- Maintain digital and physical records of reports and images.
- Coordinate with consultants and medical staff regarding urgent or critical findings.
Equipment Management
- Operate and maintain ultrasound machines efficiently.
- Perform routine equipment checks and quality assurance procedures.
- Report equipment malfunctions immediately to the Biomedical Engineering Department.
- Ensure proper cleaning and disinfection of probes and equipment after each procedure.
- Maintain adequate stock of ultrasound gel and related consumables.
Documentation & Compliance
- Maintain daily procedure logs and patient records.
- Ensure compliance with hospital policies, NABH standards, PCPNDT regulations, and other applicable statutory requirements.
- Assist in maintaining records required for audits and inspections.
- Follow infection control and radiation safety protocols where applicable.
Administrative Responsibilities
- Schedule and coordinate sonography appointments.
- Verify patient identity and documentation before procedures.
- Coordinate with billing, reception, and medical records departments.
- Maintain turnaround time for reports as per hospital standards.
Required Qualifications
- Diploma / B.Sc. in Medical Imaging Technology, Radiology, or Sonography.
- Certification in Diagnostic Medical Sonography preferred.
- Valid registration/licensing as per applicable regulations.
Experience
- Minimum 2–5 years of experience in operating ultrasound equipment in a hospital or diagnostic center.
- Experience in abdominal, pelvic, obstetric, gynecological, vascular, and small-parts sonography preferred.
- Knowledge of PCPNDT documentation and compliance is desirable.
Required Skills
- Proficiency in operating advanced ultrasound machines.
- Strong knowledge of sonography procedures and reporting formats.
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
- Good communication and patient-handling skills.
- Knowledge of Hospital Information Systems (HIS) and PACS.
- Ability to work independently and in a multidisciplinary healthcare environment.
