Web Designer & WordPress Developer
Custom Healthcare Website Rebuild Remote (UK)
About the role
MRK Medical runs a leading ear wax removal and audiology service across the West Midlands, with multiple clinic locations, a training academy, and hundreds of five-star reviews. We are rebuilding our websites across the whole company portfolio. The websites (currently Elementor-based) need to be rebuilt as a fast, hand-coded custom WordPress sites — and we want one person to own it end to end: research and design it in Figma, then build it in clean custom code.
This is a design and development role, not a page-builder job. We want a faster, better-converting, better-ranking site with a fresh, professional, trustworthy look that reflects a 30-year healthcare reputation.
Core responsibilities
- Lead the visual and UX design: wireframes, prototypes, and high-fidelity Figma designs for the full site
- Design a clear, conversion-focused journey that drives bookings and phone calls across desktop and mobile
- Create a reusable design system (typography, colour, components) for consistency and future editing
- Build a custom WordPress theme from scratch (no Elementor / page builders) from your own designs
- Develop reusable custom Gutenberg / ACF blocks so our team can edit content without breaking the design
- Carry out an SEO-safe migration: preserve URLs, map 301 redirects, migrate metadata and structured data, and protect our existing organic rankings
- Integrate our Cliniko booking system and online hearing-test flow cleanly and reliably
- Implement structured data (LocalBusiness / MedicalClinic, Review, FAQ, Breadcrumb schema) across location and service pages
- Hit and maintain strong Core Web Vitals so we no longer rely on caching plugins
- Build accessible (WCAG 2.2 AA), responsive, cross-browser interfaces
- Preserve Google Tag Manager, GA4, and conversion tracking, and build GDPR-compliant forms
- Write clean, documented, maintainable code and hand it over with clear documentation
Must-have skillsDesign
- Strong UX/UI design skills with a portfolio of sites you designed (not just built)
- Advanced Figma — wireframing, prototyping, and high-fidelity design
- Solid grasp of layout, typography, colour, hierarchy, and design systems
- Conversion-focused design thinking (turning visitors into bookings and calls)
- Ability to take a brand and produce a clean, trustworthy, professional look
Development
- Proven experience building custom-coded WordPress themes from scratch (live examples, not page-builder sites)
- Strong modern PHP (8+) and deep knowledge of the WordPress template hierarchy, hooks, filters, and WP_Query
- Custom Gutenberg block development (block.json / React) and/or ACF Pro
- Custom post types and taxonomies (Locations, Services, Team, Hearing Aids, etc.)
- WordPress REST API and custom endpoints
- Strong JavaScript (vanilla ES6+), semantic HTML5, and CSS/SCSS (Grid, Flexbox, mobile-first)
- WordPress security best practice (escaping, sanitisation, nonces, prepared queries)
- Technical SEO and migration experience — redirect mapping, structured data, and a record of migrating sites without losing rankings
- Performance optimisation: Core Web Vitals, image optimisation (WebP/AVIF), lazy loading, critical CSS
- Git version control and a professional staging-then-deploy workflow
- Confident written and verbal English; able to advise on feasibility and document their work
Strongly preferred
- Experience integrating booking systems (Cliniko or similar) and review widgets (Google / TrustIndex)
- Local SEO experience with multi-location sites
- Accessibility (WCAG) experience on healthcare or regulated sites
- GDPR / UK data-protection awareness for forms handling personal data
- Modern build tooling (Vite / Webpack, npm, SCSS pipelines)
- Familiarity with managed WordPress hosting, Cloudflare, and migration tools
What a strong application looks like
